Aging animals: Pets today are living longer

.............Dental health
Often overlooked, good dental care is a must if you wish to keep your senior pet around for a few more years.
This begins with regular brushing with a soft toothbrush and pet toothpaste, which may be chicken or tuna-flavored. Avoid "human" toothpaste. The fluoride in them is toxic to animals, Salbego said.
Like humans, pets need annual, professional teeth cleaning. Promptly treat broken teeth and any periodontal disease that may occur since infection can enter the bloodstream and damage organs, Salbego said.

Australians turn to home treatment to remove fluoride

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA — Drinking water treatment equipment sales across the state of Queensland, of which Brisbane is the capital, are soaring following the introduction of a nearly statewide fluoridation program, according to a December 30 article in The Courier Mail.
Almost 80 percent of southeast Queensland homes now receive fluoridated water; other areas soon will come on line.
Gary Young, owner/manager of Water Wizard, a Brisbane-based, family-operated water treatment company, told the Courier Mail that he has been inundated with inquiries since the Queensland government announced the fluoridation program. He said, “I’m having to bring more (equipment) over (from overseas) because we’ve just about sold out.”
Young said one system that effectively reduces fluoride uses reverse osmosis technology, but he noted that not even the best such systems could eliminate all traces of fluoride.
Young said in the article that typical units can range from 400 Australian dollars (US$276) to A$1,000 (US$690), and can cost up to A$150 (US$104) a year to maintain.

USA - Grand Blanc periodontist taking dental health to a world stage as president of International College of Dentists

GRAND BLANC, Michigan -- Dr. Dick Shick has spent practically his whole life fighting for exceptional dental health.
Now, the periodontist soon will be calling the shots from the helm of a world authority on the subject.
On Thursday, the Grand Blanc man becomes president of the International College of Dentists, where he will oversee a variety of humanitarian dental efforts across the globe. Shick said he also will attend meetings and give input on policy decisions within the organization.
Shick and wife Rose Marie's 2009 travel schedule is extensive, with trips already planned to South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Spain, Canada and Portugal.
"He's considered an ambassador for the International College of Dentists," said the organization's executive assistant, Kathleen Bula.
"He travels to different parts of the world and greets our fellows as they get inducted into the college. He's also a gatherer of information, and that information we use to help us help others."
For instance, Shick will travel to underdeveloped countries and make recommendations to the college about what could better the dental healthcare there, such as putting fluoride in the water or adding more dentists, Bula said.
Shick, 79 and a Davison native, was inducted into the International College of Dentists in 1976 and has served as president of the Michigan Dental Association and the first vice president of the American Dental Association. He's also a member of the American College of Dentists, but has been focusing his efforts in the invitation-only international organization, where he was chosen as vice president two years ago before moving up to president-elect. Shick said about 3 percent of American dentists are members.
"It's an honor to be invited," Shick said of joining the international association. "You don't apply for it. Somebody in the college has to observe what you've done in the way of voluntary services. Your name goes through an extensive screening process to identify if you in fact have been a volunteer, then you're voted in."
One of Shick's voluntary efforts has been to help implement fluoride into Flint's water in 1966, he said.
Shick has been in the profession all his life, he said, except for when he served in the U.S. Air Force and was attending school at Flint Junior College and the University of Michigan. At UM, he earned his specialization in periodontics, the area of dentistry that works with the supporting structures of the teeth. He opened his own practice in Flint in 1954 and retired in 1995.
Bula said Shick's passion for dentistry is seen through his dedication.
"He's very polite and genuine. ... He's very dedicated to this organization," she said. "He's a wonderful person to work for."

It's a shame that an old-timer will be spreading misinformation about fluoridation. He probably isn't aware, as many dentists are unaware (see http://tinyurl.com/Yoder), that modern science indicates that fluoride's beneficial effects are topical not systemic. This means swallowing fluoride conferns little, if any, benefit but does expose people to fluoride's adverse health effects which undoubtably Dr. Schick has not been taught about.

Some health risks of fluoride are here
http://www.FluorideAction.net/health

Fluoridation is an out-dated non-scientific method whose time has gone. After 60 years of water fluoridation and 50 years of fluoridated toothpaste, tooth decay is an epidemic, according to the US Surgeon General.

At the same time, fluoride overdose symptoms (dental fluorosis) are afflicting almost half of US school children, according to the Centers for Disease Control

We can see how fluoride discolors teeth. But unseen is how fluoride is weakening bones.

Canada - ODA ‘sets record straight’ on fluoridation

Dear editor,
I was alarmed to read a recent suggestion to strip fluoride from the water supply. The author of the letter suggests water fluoridation is a “waste of tax money” and goes on to call it “toxic sludge.”
As President of the Ontario Dental Association I want to set the record straight on the overwhelming evidence of the safety and benefits of water fluoridation in your community.
According to a Health Canada report released in 2007 by a panel of medical experts, water fluoridation in the correct amount is both safe and effective.
Furthermore, Health Canada’s website states they “support water fluoridation as a public health measure to prevent dental decay,” and that “the big advantage of water fluoridation is that it benefits all residents in a community regardless of age, socioeconomic status, education or employment.”
But if this isn’t enough evidence for you, international experts such as the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia has recognized the fluoridation of drinking water to prevent dental decay as “one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.” The U.S. Surgeon General also agrees. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that “universal access to fluoride for dental health is a part of the basic human right to life.” And finally, the American Dental Association estimates that every dollar invested in water fluoridation saves $38 in dental costs.
These are the facts. Anything else is fear mongering.
Please take the time to get to know the facts about this important issue; they will make a tremendous difference to you and to your family. For more information you can visit our website at www.youroralhealth.ca

Australia - OPPONENTS of water fluoridation have vowed to give LNP leader Lawrence Springborg their vote if he moves to scrap controversial practice

OPPONENTS of water fluoridation have vowed to give LNP leader Lawrence Springborg their vote if he moves to scrap the controversial practice.Almost 80 per cent of southeast Queensland households are now drinking fluoridated water.Do you agree with use of fluoride? Tell usOnly Toowoomba, Caboolture, Redland City and pockets of the Sunshine Coast, north of the Maroochy River, are still to come online. Our health sectionPremier Anna Bligh has said the initiative would help turn around Queensland's bad oral health but the Government continues to receive criticism.Queenslanders for Safe Water, Air and Food spokeswoman Merilyn Haines yesterday said the group would throw its weight behind Opposition Leader Mr Springborg."(The fight) definitely isn't over," she said.
"There's a state election just around the corner and if 30 per cent of people are opposed to fluoridation, and half of that change their vote, then it could be a very hot issue."The LNP are looking at making it an election issue and they've said they're looking at a referendum."We would be encouraging people to vote for (Springborg) if he's promising a referendum." This month, Mr Springborg told The Courier-Mail the LNP did not have a policy on fluoridation but he promised greater community consultation in areas yet to be affected. "Where it hasn't gone in, we would certainly be consulting with them," he said.Ms Haines said Queenslanders unable to afford filtration systems were considering legal action."Discrimination cases can be made and we'll be looking at that very closely," she said.
"There is already a class action group being formed."Anna Bligh just says you can use reverse osmosis (a common filtration system) or buy bottled water for the rest of your life, but a lot of people can't afford that." People should have a choice, it should never be forced on us." Health Minister Stephen Robertson has consistently said fluoridation is safe. "There have been numerous studies and subsequent reviews which have confirmed the safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation in reducing dental decay," he said. All state water supplies will contain fluoride by 2012 under the $35 million project.

That is what we need to do in the UK vote for a party that puts a stop to this mass medication

Australia - Fluoride enters South-East water supplies

Fluoride enters South-East water supplies
Andrew Wight | December 29, 2008 - 1:45PM
South-east Queensland kids will have more reason to be proud of their smiles after fluoridated water started flowing through household taps for the first time today.
Premier Anna Bligh said 50 per cent of Queensland children suffered from dental decay before the age of six, and the state's population had the worst dental health in the nation.
Fluoridated water is now flowing into almost 80 per cent of households in the region.
"The introduction of fluoride into the state's water system marks the biggest single advance in the oral health of Queenslanders," Ms Bligh said.
"Queensland has the unenviable title of having the worst dental health in Australia.
"We spend more on dental health than any other state, and yet our children and our population generally have the worst dental decay.
"This is the single most important preventative health initiative taken here in Queensland for decades."
Within four years 90 per cent of Queenslanders will be drinking fluoridated water, Ms Bligh said. She attempted to reassure those who remain opposed to fluoride.
"Cities like Sydney and Melbourne and Townsville have been using fluoride for up to five decades," Ms Bligh said.
"We have world experience now that demonstrates that this is not only safe, it is a very effective way of improving dental health."
Meanwhile, the Australian Dental Association (ADA) has welcomed the introduction of fluoride into most of south-east Queensland today, which was ahead of schedule.
A spokesman for the Department of Deputy Premier and Infrastructure and Planning, which is handling the roll-out said that from today fluoride would be introduced to all of the water treatments plant in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, as well as most on the Sunshine Coast.
"The introduction went smoothly and we're even a couple of days ahead of schedule," he said.
ADA Queensland Branch and Rockhampton dentist Greg Moore said: "The whole population of Queensland will benefit from the introduction.
"It will take a while to take effect, but in five years, we could see a 20-40 per cent reduction in tooth decay," he said.
The move, which will see a final concentration of 0.6 parts per million, will bring south-east Queensland into line with other states in Australia and with other towns and cities in Queensland.
"Townville has had it since 1964 and Moranbah and Dalby have naturally fluoridated water supplies," Mr Moore said.

"Removing decay is not the most rewarding part of dentistry. The most rewarding part is seeing someone grow up with good dental health.
"Fluoride is not the entire answer to dental care, but it provides benefits to growing teeth and protection for elderly people who may have damaged teeth.

"Soft drinks, energy drinks and sports drinks are still major contributors to dental disease."

Meanwhile, Queensland's Health Minister Stephen Robertson has acknowledged recent petitions against the introduction.

"Two petitions totalling almost 6,000 signatures have been received in the past month, and we have taken on board the concerns expressed in them," Mr Robertson said.

"However, the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence demonstrates that adding fluoride to the water supply is an effective and safe means of strengthening the oral health of the community.

"Water fluoridation is supported by the World Health Organisation, the National Health and Medical Council, the Public Health Association of Australia, the Australian Medical Association and the Australian Dental Association."

USA - mobile Dental SERVICES for Schools

Most of the millions of low-income children in the United States do not receive proper dental care and many experience acute dental pain. Low-income children are up to 5 times more likely to have untreated tooth decay and this frequently causes general health problems, learning difficulties, discomfort, eating problems, and esteem issues. Mobile dentists working in school-based dental programs have been shown to be an effective tool at addressing these problems. Children benefit from healthier teeth and improved readiness to learn. Schools benefit from reduced absenteeism, parent appreciation, and improved learning on behalf of students. Dentists benefit because the school-based program provides them a channel for reaching kids who otherwise would not make it into their practice despite needing treatment. Furthermore, we provide administrative services to dentists while relying on their participation to make the program work rather than competing with them.

FAN Bulletin 1026: Another meta-analysis of Chinese IQ studies published
December 27, 2008
Another meta-analysis of Chinese studies showing a possible relationship between fluoride exposure and lowered IQ has just been published. This study by Liu and Cian of the Department of Health Statistics, China Medical University, in Shenyang, China was published in Chinese (see the English abstract below). The authors reviewed 13 individual studies and found that their statistical analysis suggested "a negative correlation between high fluorosis exposure and children's intelligence development" and concluded that "Exposure to high levels of fluoride may adversely influence children's intelligence development." FAN will be using some of the money we are raising right now to have this translated, along with the other 5 Chinese IQ studies which are still only available in Chinese.

This study by Liu ad Cian comes on the heels of the study by Tang et al. (2008) published in August and an analysis by Connett, M and Limeback, H, presented at the IADR conference in Toronto, in July. All three reviews have yielded similar conclusions.

Links to all 23 individual studies (from India, Iran, Mexico and China) which report an association between fluoride exposure and lowered IQ in children is at http://fluoridealert.org/iq.studies.html

One wonders how long zealous promoters of fluoridation will be able to maintain the fiction that saving at most 0.6 of one permanent tooth surface (Brunelle and Carlos, 1990) can possibly justify risking the development of our children's brains. This third review of the issue certainly provides another reason for more professionals to sign the statement calling for an end to fluoridation worldwide, as well as more ammunition for our 2009 campaign. But we still have to finance that campaign. Which brings us to FAN's fundraiser.

FAN FUNDRAISER

New meta-analysis from China (abstract)

Title: Effect of endemic fluorosis on children's intelligence development: a Meta analysis.
Authors: Liu M, Qian C. Department of Health Statistics, China Medical University, Shenyang 110001, China.
Journal: Zhongguo Dang Dai Er Ke Za Zhi. 2008 Dec;10(6):723-5. [Article in Chinese]

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of high levels of fluoride on children's intelligence development by analyzing the literatures systematically.
METHODS: The literatures on the relationship between endemic fluorosis and children's intelligence development published between 1995 and 2007 were retrieved electronically and manually. A total of 13 relevant literatures that met the inclusion criteria were included for Meta analysis. Meta analysis was performed using the Coorporative network software RevMan 4.3.
RESULTS: The subjects of the 13 literatures included 2 508 children from the high fluoride group and 2 330 children from the control group. Meta analysis showed these literatures were inhomogenous (x2=268.05, p<0.01). Therefore a random effect model was used. The average effect scale (OR=-7.14; 95%CI: -9.90, -4.37) suggested a negative correlation between high fluorosis exposure and children's intelligence development.
CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to high levels of fluoride may adversely influence children's intelligence development.

USA - Despite objections, Authority opts out of using fluoride

Friday, December 26, 2008 8:02 AM EST
By Evan Brandt, ebrandt@pottsmerc.com
POTTSTOWN — Despite the urging of two dental experts, the Pottstown Borough Authority has taken the first steps toward no longer adding fluoride to the public water supply.
Elkins Park dentist Bernard P. Dishler, representing the Pennsylvania Dental Association, told the authority that "we were always proud that Pottstown was one of the few communities in our area that adds fluoride. Frankly, we're a little disappointed you're even thinking about removing it."
Calling sites on the Internet that question the safety of adding fluoride to tap water "junk science," Dishler said "fluoridation is perfectly safe and we have 50 years of research to back that up.
"Any recognized authority has said it's perfectly safe," he said.
Dishler said the practice reduces dental decay by "40 to 60 percent" and said having it in the tap water of communities with a high percentage of low-income families is especially beneficial.
Low-income families typically cannot afford dental care, so having a preventative like fluoride in the water, which can prevent cavities, saves them money, Dishler said.
"Every $1 invested in fluoride in the water saves $38 in dental treatments later on, so by looking to save $50,000 that it costs to fluoridate, you may cost your residents $2 million in dental care," said Dishler.
Fluoride in tap water "does not discriminate," he said.
Bruce Terry, an endontist who works in Phoenixville, said of fluoridation, "We know absolutely that it works."
"It's a no-brainer as far as any dentist in the country," Terry said. "I know it's troubled times, but I say turn the spin around and say look at what you're doing for your community."
Later in the meeting, the board voted 3-2 to begin the procedure for stopping the practice.
Authority member Don Read, who head's the board's marketing committee, said having fluoride in the water can make it more difficult to market Pottstown's water to some customers. He said in a recent conversation with Pennsylvania American, the fact that Pottstown's water has fluoride in it may make it more difficult to reach an agreement.
Authority member Tom Carroll, who with Aram Ecker voted against making any change to the current fluoridation practices, pointed to what the dentists had to say.
"I think there is some value in what they had to say," Carroll said. "I think it's important to take care of our society as the dentists recommend.
"You took the words right out of my mouth," said Ecker.
Authority Solicitor David Garner said the vote taken Dec. 16 does not commit the authority to a final decision.
"It begins a process of gathering further information," said Garner. "Even if you approve the process, it does not commit you to doing it."
He added, "There is probably a need for a subsequent vote. You are not necessarily voting to eliminate it.
"This is one way to create a public response," said Authority Chairman Ronald Downie.
Garner noted that almost as soon as the last article about a previous discussion on this issue was published on The Mercury Web site, "people started commenting right away."
Carroll, however, said "I believe what the dentists said tonight."
To which Downie responded that "no one is right 100 percent of the time and some of the science I have seen on this issue on the Internet is not junk science."

Celebrities are Smarter than "Skeptical Scientists" When it Comes to Health Literacy

NaturalNews) The science "skeptics" are at it again, attacking the credibility of celebrities who they say demonstrate astonishing levels of scientific illiteracy. Barack Obama, Oprah, Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kate Moss and Julianne Moore have all been labeled scientifically illiterate by the UK non-profit Sense About Science, which you'll learn more on below.

What, exactly, did these celebrities say that earned them the distinction of being labeled scientifically illiterate?

Julianne Moore warned people about using personal care products containing toxic chemicals. But according to Sense About Science, apparently, there's no such thing as a dangerous chemical in personal care products because all the chemicals have been "rigorously tested" and approved (false).

Tom Cruise was blasted yet again for describing modern psychiatry as committing "crimes against humanity." Sense About Science, on the other hand, believes it's no crime at all to dose six-month old infants with mind-altering psychotropic drugs that are linked to violent behavior. It's all scientifically supported, didn't you know?

President-elect Barack Obama made some comments during his pre-election campaigns that indicated he wanted to look into possible links between vaccines and autism. But these days, anyone who even questions the safety of vaccines is immediately labeled either a quack or scientifically illiterate by the conventional medical community, and Sense About Science is no exception: They believe vaccines are 100% safe and that the dramatic rise in autism that has closely tracked the rise in vaccinations is pure coincidence.

Kate Moss and Demi Moore were attacked over the idea that superfood diets could somehow "detoxify" the body. Sense About Science believes there's no such thing as a "toxic" body, since all the chemicals people eat are safe to begin with. Thus, they claim there is no way to detoxify the blood or the body in the first place, and foods (or juices) are nutritionally inert, apparently...................

Pottstown Borough Authority Takes Steps to Cut Flouride
Residents in one Montgomery County community will soon have a chance to chime in on a fight over fluoride. The Pottstown Borough Authority has given the green light to stop using fluoride in water. Officials say cutting it could save the borough about $50,000 a year. But, opponents say fluoride is a major benefit, especially when it comes to fighting cavities. Public hearings will now be scheduled. The borough will make a final decision after that.

Do we need fluoride in our bottled water? December 25, 2008 09:41 PM PST
Most of Australia's large cities and towns already have fluoride added to the water supply...but now, the huge bottled water industry, is pushing to have the medication in some of its products.
The Australian Beverages Council has asked the food standards authority to approve the use of fluoride in bottled drinks.
For many the topic of fluoridated water is a hotly contested issue.
The Australian Dental Association says there is strong evidence that tooth decay is dramatically reduced by fluoride.
But The Australian Fluoride Information Network says compulsory fluoridation is wrong and should be reviewed.
They say governments should not be allowed to medicate the entire population.
This report from 2ser's Michelle Watts features:
- Ailsa Boyden spokesperson for the Australian Fluoridation Information Network.
- Jason Armfield – senior research officer at the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health.
- Shane Fryer - Vice President of the Australian Dental Association.

USA - Ann Arbor hygienist honored for work with preschoolers

Q: Tell us about the "Smiles for a Lifetime" Head Start dental care program.

A: Twice a year we go into the Head Start schools and perform sessions of (fluoride varnish treatments). We also do dental screening exams to try to assess the need for further care, and to get the (students) referred to dental offices in the area.

We did fluoride varnish for about 550 children in October and November of this year. In April, we're planning to go back.

Fluoride varnish is a sticky substance that provides fluoride to the enamel of the teeth. It's long lasting - about eight to 24 hours.

Q: Why do you think this program is important?

A: Underserved children have a lot of decay in their teeth, in their front teeth especially. (Fluoride varnish) is really good to strengthen their teeth and arrest the decay.

... The more prevention we can give the (students) earlier, the better it's going to be for their learning. They can learn better if they don't have a toothache. These kids don't always have all the opportunities a lot of other children have.

Not only are we instructing children in good dental practice, but we're instructing parents that it's important to take your kids to the dentist before they have a toothache.

This is a program we provide as a free service to the children and their families. We're not paid - we're volunteers.

Q: How long will this program remain?

A: We have a state grant this year for the program ... but it's unclear if it will continue. We're probably fine for next year - hopefully with community resources or Head Start money, we can continue it. We're trying to be really cost-effective.

There's no more need to drop tanks

There's no more need to drop tanks, soldiers and bombs on nations in order to conquer them. Countries can be controlled through economics, intellectual property law, banking and finance systems. Consumers can be controlled through advertising, publicity and corporate-fabricated fake news.

The corporations, as always, rake in the profits while the consumers pay the price all over the world. They eat their American hamburgers, drink their American sodas, take their American medicines and think they're cool, sophisticated consumers even while their internal organs are beginning to fail from all the toxic chemicals. Soon, they will suffer from American diseases: Cancer, diabetes, depression, osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity and violent, psychotic behavior. In fact, we're already seeing it: Countries like Thailand and Japan are witnessing unprecedented obesity for the first time in history, and diseases like diabetes and depression are only a few years away from becoming pandemic throughout Asia. This is almost entirely from their adoption of western diets and medical practices.

UK - Fluoride could be flowing through taps

Fluoride could be flowing through taps
8:30am Tuesday 23rd December 2008
By Ali Dent »
FLUORIDE could soon be flowing through South Gloucestershire taps in a bid to improve the region’s dental health. Technical studies are being carried out on how fluoridation of the Bristol Water area would be carried out and a public consultation is due to be launched next year. Director of public health at NHS South Gloucestershire, Dr Chris Payne, said adding fluoride to our water would lead to major improvements in dental health. "Fluoridation is safe and effective in reducing decay," he said. "The likely impact would be a 30 per cent reduction in the overall tooth decay in five to six-year-olds. "There would also be an increase of 12 per cent in those with no problems with their teeth whatsoever."
"The benefits would be most apparent in children but they would evident in adults as well." He said five areas in South Gloucestershire with ‘exceptionally high’ tooth decay rates in children would particularly benefit from the scheme.
They include central and west Yate, where almost half of all children show signs of tooth decay. Added Dr Payne: "There are high dental decay rates in children aged between five and six in central and west Yate and in some of our poorer communities.
"Poor dental health is strongly associated with deprivation and poverty and there is also a strong association in some of our poor areas with the levels of childhood obesity and poor dental health." He said adding fluoride to the region’s water supply was expected to spark controversy with the public. The PCT is awaiting a feasibility study on the project but members of the trust board said they were in favour of fluoridation. Chairman Chris Clarke told a meeting of the board last Wednesday: "I can see no problem and it makes an awful lot of sense."
Non-executive director David Hardwood said: "There must a lot of health benefits other than dental. I imagine fluoride helps with all sorts of things.
"I just can’t quite see why we have to go into such detail on fluoridation when companies already put all sorts of cocktails of chemicals in the water to purify it."
Gillian Sinkinson (CORR), non-executive director, said: "Like a lot of the population, I thought fluoridation was already being done and had been for many years. In fact I am quite shocked it is not."

What a statement to make and he is on the PCT Board.

FAN Bulletin 1022: Quotes of the year: a request
December 21, 2008
QUOTES OF THE YEAR.
Here is a fun request. What is your favorite (i.e. most memorable) quote of the year: either from an opponent of fluoridation or a proponent? My favorite comes from Dr. Peter Cooney, the Chief Dental officer of Canada, who said in Dryden, Ontario on April 1, 2008:

"I have walked around your town today, and I didn't see anyone
growing horns and you have been fluoridated for years"

SOUTHAMPTON MATERIAL
As you know I was very involved with the "consultation process" on the proposal to fluoridate Southampton and some adjacent towns in Hampshire, UK. That included participation in three public "Question Times" on Oct 20, Nov 18 and Dec 3. One of the ironies of this whole process is that it was videotaped and the organizers said several times that these videos were going to be used to document all the questions raised by the public, but they never indicated that they would use the videos to review the panelists' answers! Am I being too sensitive here?

I also slogged away for 4 solid days to get in a written submission against fluoridation. The document is 70 pages long and available at http://fluoridealert.org/connett.sha.2008.pdf. I have no illusions that this effort will make much of a dent in the Strategic Health Authority's determination to fluoridate Southampton. They made this pretty clear in the atrocious glossy propaganda they distributed - at taxpayers' expense - and a postcard "Healthier teeth on tap" that was mailed to everyone. On this postcard citizens were asked to put their name to this statement: "I support fluoridation as a safe and effective method of reducing high levels of dental decay for children and adults." No alternative statement was offered - just a place for other comments at the bottom of the card. Some citizens might have spotted that this option was available to record a no vote, but many would not have realized that this was an option. Many would have sent in a "yes" vote, because of the card's superficial look of authority and many who might have sent in a "no" vote, if the opportunity to do so was equally available, would not have done so based on this postcard. Clever. This is British taxpayers' money at work. Fair play?

Any way so that my effort was not a complete and utter waste of time I am hoping that my submission will be helpful to citizens not only in Southampton as they fight politically to overturn a "done deal" but citizens elsewhere in other ways. One way is to offer to you a list of questions which could be used in any jurisdiction proposing fluoridation (or with modification in a community which is reconsidering an existing policy, which many are doing). I have printed out this list of questions below.

FAN FUNDRAISER
As of 3 pm today, we have raised $2515 towards our Super Angel's matching challenge to raise $2000 by Tuesday Dec 23. So we did it, with two days to spare! Thank you everybody. And a huge thank you again to our second super angel: people just love to see their donations doubled like this.

Our current total (which includes our Super Angel's $2000) is $19,154 from 132 donors. We are a long way from our goal of $80,000 by midnight Dec 31, but we still have 10 days to go. Realistically we will probably have to settle for half this, and hope that we can make up the rest with donations throughout the year. Or fundraising for special projects.

Making a secure tax-deductible donation online is very easy and quick to do. Simply click here. If you prefer, you can send a check, in US$, payable to FAN to: Paul Connett, 82 Judson Street, Canton NY 13617.

Thank you.

Key Questions for cross-examining promoters of fluoridation

1) How convincing is the evidence that this community is confronted with a dental crisis which would warrant this kind of intervention?

2) How convincing is the evidence that swallowing fluoride reduces dental decay?

3) Is swallowing fluoride the best way of protecting the tooth enamel? Are there more appropriate delivery systems?

4) Have other communities demonstrated alternative methods of fighting tooth decay which do not involve forcing a practice on people who may not want it?

5) Are children in this community already exceeding the "optimal dose" of fluoride as hypothesized by early promoters of fluoridation? This can be gauged by current dental fluorosis incidence. If over 10% of children have dental fluorosis, then by the promoters' own hypothesis the community is already getting enough fluoride from other sources.

6) If ingested fluoride is necessary to protect children's teeth can you explain why it is that the level of fluoride is so low in mothers' milk (0.004 ppm)? Did evolution screw up on the infant's nutritional requirements?

7) What is the evidence that has convinced you that this program can be applied without causing any damage to the health of citizens, especially infants and young children, other than an increase in the incidence of dental fluorosis?

8) What is the evidence that has convinced you that a bottle fed infant will suffer no damage to its growing tissues when exposed to fluids containing fluoride at levels 250 times higher than the level in mothers milk (1 ppm versus 0.004 ppm)?

9) What is the evidence that has convinced you that fluoride can damage the growing tooth cells (by some systemic mechanism) without damaging any other tissue in the child's developing body?

10) What is the evidence that has convinced you that no one in the community is particularly sensitive or vulnerable to fluoride's known toxic effects?

11) Do you dispute the fact that fluoride - given in a sufficient dose - can cause a whole range of health effects from the very mild to the very serious? Do you dispute the fact that this has been demonstrated in hundreds of studies from India, China and other countries and communities which are exposed to high levels of natural fluoride in their water?

12) Please present a discussion of what is meant by "Margin of safety" for a toxic substance or "therapeutic index" for a pharmaceutical substance.

13) In your view is there an adequate margin of safety between the doses or levels reported to cause adverse effects in the National Research Council (NRC, 2006) report, "Fluoride in Drinking Water" and the doses that people are likely to receive drinking fluoridated water (together with fluoride from other sources like dental products, pesticides etc) sufficient to protect everyone in your community?

14) There have now been 23 studies from 4 different countries (Iran, India, Mexico and China) which demonstrate a possible linkage between fluoride exposure and lowered IQ in children. What evidence has convinced you that all 23 studies can be safely ignored.

15) What peer-reviewed and PRIMARY published studies can you cite which have examined a possible relationship between fluoride exposure and lowered IQ in fluoridated communities and convinced you that this is not a problem?

16) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have examined a possible relationship between fluoride exposure and lowered thyroid function (including sub-clinical hypothyroidism) in fluoridated communities and convinced you that this is not a problem?

17) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have compared the levels of fluoride in the pineal glands of people living in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities and convinced you that this is not a problem?

18) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have examined a possible relationship between a) fluoride exposure and melatonin levels and b) fluoride exposure and an earlier onset of puberty among children in fluoridated communities and and convinced you that this is not a problem?

19) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have examined a possible relationship between fluoride exposure and bone fractures in children in fluoridated communities and convinced you that this is not a problem?

20) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have examined a possible relationship between fluoride exposure and arthritis in fluoridated communities and convinced you that this is not a problem?

21) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which has convinced you that lifelong consumption of fluoridated water along with other sources of fluoride will not weaken the bones of the elderly and cause an increased rate of hip fractures, in fluoridated communities?

22) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have examined a possible relationship between fluoride exposure and osteosarcoma in fluoridated communities, and convinced you that this is not a problem?

23) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have used the severity of dental fluorisis as a biomarker for epidemiological studies on children in fluoridated communities?

24) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have surveyed the population in the UK or any other fluoridated country, in a comprehensive fashion for the level of fluoride in their bones as a function of age, fluoridation status and other variables?

25) What peer-reviewed and published PRIMARY studies can you cite which have surveyed the population in any other fluoridated country, in a comprehensive fashion for the level of fluoride in their urine, as a function of age, diet, fluoridation status and other variables?

26) Are you satisfied that over the 60 year history of fluoridation that sufficient effort has been made by the governments, which promote this practice, to investigate possible health effects (in tissues other than the teeth) in fluoridated communities?

27) Are any health studies being planned for the communities to be fluoridated?

28) Will any compensation be given to children who develop very mild, mild, moderate or severe dental fluorosis in fluoridated communities? Will they be provided with free treatment for these conditions if desired?

29) If citizens complain of reversible symptoms, which elsewhere have been identified as being caused by fluoride (i.e. they cease when the source of fluoride is removed), will any steps be taken to investigate the matter scientifically?

30) Please discuss what you understand by the Precautionary Principle. Do you believe that in the context of the current scientific uncertainties about fluoridation's effectiveness and safety, and the availability of alternatives, that fluoridation is consistent with the Precautionary Principle?

31) Normally governments only use their police power to enforce medication on people when they are dealing with a life threatening contagious disease. Do you believe that this is the situation which confronts this community with respect to current dental decay levels?

32) Bearing in mind your responses to all of the above, are you convinced that the evidence of benefit from this practice is so strong, and the evidence of harm so weak, that it merits the application of governmental police power to force this practice on your citizens regardless of their views on the matter?

33) Could you summarize the evidence that has convinced you that there are no extra problems associated with using hexafluorosilicic acid (an industrial waste product) as a fluoridating chemical as opposed to pharmaceutical grade sodium fluoride?

34) If you are convinced that children's teeth in this community will benefit from ingesting fluoridated water please compare these two delivery systems: 1) adding contaminated hexafluorosilicic acid to the public water supply and 2) making fluoridated bottled water available in local supermarkets and chemists, and free for families of low income.

35) Are you prepared to do the whole community what an individual doctor is not allowed to do his or her individual patients: i.e. override the individual's right to informed consent to medication?

USA - Legislators Need to Bite the Bullet, Too

Legislators Need to Bite the Bullet, Too
Diary Entry by Sally Stride
Legislators can save us all money if they would refuse Political Action Committee (PAC) and other political contributions for a year, at least. The cost of "buying" politicians trickles down to all Americans either directly or indirectly

Legislators are asking us to "Bite The Bullet."But what are they doing?
Besides the obvious - taking pay and benefit cuts as many Americans with jobs are being forced to do - legislators must refuse PAC money for the next year. Yes, it will hurt them. There's plenty of pain to share in these sad economic times.
The trickle down effect will be lower costs for consumer goods and services, more money in taxpayers' pockets to spend on items that will bring more tax revenue to states.
Costs of running a business are always passed onto the consumer – lobbying costs and PAC money included.
It's a totally win-win proposition – except for the legislators who might be forced to run on their merits and not their political bank accounts with all the strings attached.
For example: The New York State Dental Society gave $348,000 to New York State politicians last year, according to the NY Public Interest Research Group. Generally, special interest groups give legislators money to get laws passed or not-passed which favor themselves. The NYS Dental Society is especially adept at this, getting most everything they ask for, according to the New York Times.
Organized dentistry gets loads of money from corporations that profit from tooth decay and pass some of it on to legislators. This adds to your cost of toothpaste and dental appointments.
Dentists make more money than physicians while working fewer days and hours doing less critical work, according to the New York Times. At the same time, tooth decay has become a national epidemic, according to the US Surgeon General. It's like dentists receiving a "good work Brownie" award.
The solution would be to require dentists to treat more low-income Americans – either for free, for what Medicaid offers, or on a sliding scale. But dentists don't like mandates – well for them anyway. But, organized dentistry is always behind water fluoridation mandates.
Fluoridation gives the illusion that organized dentistry is doing something about the oral health crisis that occurred on their watch while not actually hurting their bottom line – no matter what they tell you.
With lucrative speaking engagements, deep pockets and a network of dentists ready and willing to call, phone and email, organized dentistry gets what they want way too often. Oh, and they lobby heavily against any viable group willing to fill their void – such as dental therapists which are similar to what physicians' assistants are to physicians. They don't like any group infringing upon their lucrative monopoly.
"For every child without health insurance, there are three who lack dental insurance, and the number of dentally uninsured Americans totals more than 100 million. Three out of four dentists do not treat patients with Medicaid insurance; many more do not treat those who are uninsured" according to an editorial in the American Academy of Family Practitioners.
American children have died from untreated tooth decay.
New York State's Governor Patterson is proposing extensive tax increases to offset revenue shortfalls. So Governor Patterson what are you giving up? Will you start by saying "no thanks" to the NY Dental Society's PAC money?

UK - Our right to refuse fluoride

Our right to refuse fluoride
Dec 20 2008 by Val Javin, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
WHAT A pity Dr Clemenson didn’t mention, in his pro-fluoride article (Examiner, December 16), the more serious dangers of fluoridisation – for example, stomach cancer.
As the information about this and other problems connected with fluoride is well known, I won’t repeat it here. But I’m surprised the good Doctor didn’t deal with it. Perhaps he couldn’t.
If people want to use fluoride, they can buy the toothpaste that contains it. If they want further to reduce the risk to their teeth, they can avoid eating sweets and drinking pop. If they’re bothered about children’s teeth, they can encourage the use of fluoridated toothpaste and discourage the provision of sweets and fizzy drinks by ignorant, lazy and stupid parents. Having seen young mothers cramming sweetstuffs into the mouths of their infants, I’m all in favour of such people being arrested and charged with child abuse.
To enforce medication by fluoridation upon people who have no medical need for it and no desire for it is a form of assault and therefore a breach of their human rights. This should be actionable at law.
If fluoridation becomes a serious risk, I recommend some or all of the following.
First, ensure that any local politician who votes for fluoride is never elected again. Secondly, buy an ion exchange filter to get rid of the fluoride and bill Yorkshire Water for it.
Thirdly, don’t waste your time petitioning or demonstrating; instead, collect a small sum – say £1 or perhaps £5 – from every opponent of fluoride, then use it to employ counsel and take the authority to court. If necessary pursue the matter as far as the Court of Human Rights.

USA - Fluoride issue headed for City Council

Fluoride issue headed for City Council
Published: December 13, 2008
By Nicholas Grube
Triplicate staff writer
Jesse Salisbury doesn't like fluoride.
The 44-year-old Crescent City resident especially doesn't like the fact that he consumes it almost every day when he pours water from his tap.
"I don't believe that it's right that anybody should be forcing medication on the population as a whole," Salisbury said. "A topical solution is what you want if you really think it's good for your teeth."
Salisbury is the man behind a new push to remove fluoride from Crescent City's water supply, and he was instrumental in getting the topic on the agenda for the upcoming City Council meeting Monday.
Nearly a half-century ago, voters approved a plan to put fluoride in Crescent City's water tanks. The decision came about the same time the city decided to get its water from the Smith River rather than from a swamp next to the cemetery on Cooper Street.
Fluoridation began in the U.S. in the 1940s as a means to reduce tooth decay, and the practice became prevalent over time as cities added fluoride to their water supply.
Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls fluoridation "one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century," and that agency's Web site states that in 2006 nearly 70 percent of the U.S. population that got its water from a public supply received fluoridated water.
Critics like Salisbury think fluoridation is a conspiracy, and contend that fluoride isn't as good as everyone, including the American Dental Association, says it is.
"You say a lie enough times and everyone starts to believe it," he said.
Salisbury, as well as many others across the country, claims fluoride is not a panacea for teeth, and consuming it can lead to some adverse health effects. Some of these problems can range from dental fluorosis — which is characterized by discoloration, enamel loss and pitting of the teeth and occurs when too much fluoride is consumed — to an increased risk of bone fractures.
These issues are supported in a 2006 report by the National Research Council that found that people who consume water with 4 milligrams of fluoride per liter in it are more susceptible to these conditions.
Crescent City's fluoride level hovers between 0.8 to 1.2 milligram per liter.
Other anti-fluoride groups, such as the Fluoride Action Network, cite studies that have found high exposure to the mineral can lead to kidney and liver damage in children and even lower IQ.
"There are actually a lot of studies that have been done by other countries and they found that fluoride is bad for you," Salisbury said. "If you really start looking into this thing it really starts looking like a conspiracy."
Most dentists seem unconvinced. The American Dental Association endorses the fluoridation of community water systems and advocates for the use of products, like toothpaste, that contain fluoride.
Dr. Kirill Smirnoff is a local dentist at the Open Door Community Health Center, and he says fluoride is needed, especially in this community.
"This area is tremendously underserved dentally," Smirnoff said. "We are seeing rampant caries (tooth decay) on children and adults that shouldn't be seen."

NHS patients are cheated by £100m a year extra for their dental work
By James Chapman
Last updated at 12:36 AM on 18th December 2008
Patients are being ripped off by more than £100million a year thanks to the Government's 'botched' reforms to NHS dentistry, figures suggest.
Loopholes in a new contract for dentists are being exploited so that patients are effectively being charged twice for what should be one course of treatment, critics say.
Dentists are accused of recalling healthy patients for checkups and splitting up courses of treatment unnecessarily. The Department of Health admits there is evidence that the tactic has become widespread since the introduction of the contract in April 2006.
Now data obtained from every primary care trust shows patients could have saved up to £109million in incorrect charges – almost a quarter of the £475million paid every year.............

The Wholesale Sedation of America’s Youth

In the winter of 2000, the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of a study indicating that 200,000 two- to four-year-olds had been prescribed Ritalin for an “attention disorder” from 1991 to 1995. Judging by the response, the image of hundreds of thousands of mothers grinding up stimulants to put into the sippy cups of their preschoolers was apparently not a pretty one. Most national magazines and newspapers covered the story; some even expressed dismay or outrage at this exacerbation of what already seemed like a juggernaut of hyper-medicalizing childhood. The public reaction, however, was tame; the medical community, after a moment’s pause, continued unfazed. Today, the total toddler count is well past one million, and influential psychiatrists have insisted that mental health prescriptions are appropriate for children as young as twelve months. For the pharmaceutical companies, this is progress................

States Can Save Millions Creating Healthier Toothier Americans

States Can Save Millions Creating Healthier Toothier Americans

Fluoride Caused this Discolored Smile
New York State's Governor Patterson is proposing extensive tax increases to offset revenue shortfalls. But I have a better idea. Stop fluoridation.
This win-win decision for all states would save multi-millions of dollars and benefit every American – except maybe legislators beholden to special interest groups.
Science shows ending fluoridation saves teeth, money, preserves health and will reduce the carbon footprint, to boot, but it would irk organized dentistry. That’s the rub.
After 60 years of water fluoridation and over 50 years of fluoridated toothpaste, tooth decay is epidemic in the United States because 80% of dentists refuse to treat Medicaid patients and over 108 million Americans lack dental insurance (1). Children have died from untreated tooth decay. (2)
Diverting attention from their greed and heartlessness, dentists focus too-willing legislators on fluoridation (adding unnecessary fluoride chemicals into water supplies in a failed effort to prevent tooth decay), as if that would solve the problem. (3)
Far from fluoridation putting dentists out of business, as was once predicted, today’s dentists work fewer hours and days doing less critical work but make more money than many physicians. (4)
Seventy-two percent of NYS is fluoridated even though statistics show it’s failing to thwart cavities. (5) New York City, alone, spends approximately $14 million or more yearly on fluoridation chemicals, equipment and manpower.(6) Yet, NYC residents have among the highest cavity rates in the nation. (7)
Unfortunately, organized dentistry’s PAC money and political might speaks louder than science.(8)
One might argue that stopping fluoridation will cause higher dental costs. But studies show that, when fluoridation ends, cavities actually go down. (9) And the most highly fluoridated states have the highest rates of tooth loss. (10) Cavity crises are occurring in most fluoridated cities and states (See: http://www.FluorideNews.Blogspot.com )
Modern science shows that fluoride ingestion confers no benefits as early fluoridationists believed. Besides, today fluoride is in virtually all foods and beverages, (11) almost all toothpastes, some medicines, many dental products and is now a known component of air pollution.
No one disputes that too much fluoride is a bad thing. And there’s loads of evidence showing that Americans are over-fluoridated. For example, the Centers for Disease control reports that 48% of 12 - 15 year olds have dental fluorosis – white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted enamel – from too much fluoride ingestion when their teeth were forming. (12) We can’t see what fluoride is doing to their bones. (13)
For this reason, both the CDC and the American Dental Association advise that infant formula NOT be mixed with fluoridated water.
The National Kidney Foundation also advises kidney patients to avoid fluoridated water as malfunctioning kidneys can allow a toxic build up of fluoride in bones causing them to weaken and break. (14)
New York State can’t afford the money to get this information out. Fluoridation is outdated, unnecessary and harmful. It must be stopped.
The remedy: Dentists have unfairly influenced our legislators to pass laws that benefit themselves (15) while neglecting those that need them the most. In return, Dentists must be required to treat a certain percentage of patients for free, on a sliding scale basis or accept Medicaid payments.
Tell your local and state legislators you want fluoridation stopped.
Tell Congress you want fluoridation stopped and Congressional hearings held about why federal officials continue to promote fluoridation in the face of growing evidence of harm and ineffectiveness: http://congress.FluorideAction.Net

Brown leaf tips on houseplant

Q: My very large 'Painted Princess' indoor plant has developed brown spots on some of its leaf tips. I have not moved it or changed its watering pattern. What is the problem?
A: 'Painted Princess' is a very nice silver-variegated form of aglaonema or Chinese evergreen. Browning at the tip is almost always related to watering - either the frequency or what's in the water. I'd put my money on the second one.

A lot of houseplants - Chinese evergreens included - are sensitive to fluoride in water. That's a common element added to public water to prevent tooth decay. In plants, though, regular doses can inhibit water uptake and cause the same kind of symptoms that drought does.

UCSF receives $24.4 million to fight early childhood cavities

......The 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, from the Centers for Disease Control, illustrated these disparities in children by race/ethnicity, with 42 percent of Mexican American and 32 percent of black children ages 2-5 having decayed or filled teeth, compared with 24 percent of white children.

The new programs will assess the best way to reach susceptible young children and their caregivers to prevent early childhood caries and reduce oral health disparities. Early childhood caries is a particularly devastating form of dental caries in young children. General anesthesia is often required for treatment of early childhood caries, making it an expensive and traumatic condition to treat, said Jane Weintraub, DDS, MPH, professor and chair of the Division of Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health at UCSF.

“We need to get out the message that healthy baby teeth are important for children’s health and well-being,” said Weintraub, who is the principal investigator for the CAN DO Center. “We have an easy, relatively low-cost strategy – fluoride varnish painted on the child’s teeth – that helps to help prevent teeth from decaying and causing children to have toothaches and difficulty eating, sleeping and speaking.”

Fluoridated USA and still we have rotten teeth associated with the socially disadvantaged.

USA - BTBC passes fluoride resolution

Wednesday, December 17, 2008 1:43 PM MST
Calling it a victory at the last General Council Meeting, IHS dentist Dr. Gary Pannabecker was thrilled the Blackfeet Tribal Council passed a resolution in support of fluoridating the new Two Medicine water project.
For more than five years Dr. Pannabecker has been working to get the water fluoridated. The new Two Medicine water project will provide water to approximately 5,000 of the 10,000 residents of the Blackfeet Reservation. Community water fluoridation is one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. Even third world countries benefit from water fluoridation. It is a safe, effective, and inexpensive way to prevent tooth decay for all ages. Over 170 million people in the United States have the benefit of a fluoridated water supply................

Jack Cook wrote on Dec 18, 2008 3:17 PM:
" Dear Glacier Reporter,
Thank you for your article. I sincerely hope that more people in Montana become aware of this issue, and begin a meaningful debate over its ramifications.
The Union of Scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency has been against fluoridation for many years, but their concerns have been overridden by the EPA Administration without regard to the facts.
http://www.nteu280.org/Issues/Fluoride/NTEU280-Fluoride.htm
Despite the assurances given by the experts in city council meetings, my own personal experience is very clear on the matter of fluoride. I had fought with "mysterious" medical symptoms for about 25 years prior to doing some very serious research on fluoride and its effects on the human body. There is an estimate that perhaps five percent of the population may be extremely sensitive or allergic to the substance. I'm almost certain that I am one of them.

In September of 2007, my family began using distilled water remineralized with a small amount of sea salt as our drinking and cooking water. I noticed that my symptoms simply went away within one week of making this one change in my diet. I have not been sick since then, and none of those symptoms have returned. In fact, my teeth have gotten whiter and my dental health has actually improved significantly. My wife and I saw so much improvement that we took the next logical step; we had all our mercury amalgams removed and replaced with much safer filling materials. Once you realize how very small amounts of a neurotoxin can affect your nervous system, the idea of intentionally ingesting those toxins becomes ludicrous.

After researching this issue for more than a year, the dangers of fluoridation have become all too clear to me. I don't even have to be a "qualified" scientist to realize the political and scientific ignorance that has exposed our population to an extreme toxin and non approved medication that is added to our water for us to drink without measured dose and without individual prescription or oversight by qualified medical doctors. More than 95 percent of the substance never actually reaches the population it is meant to serve, but instead, becomes a very cheap and convenient method of disposing (or maybe I should use the term "spreading around") a substance that is originally a pollution by product of the fertilizer industry. In effect, we have managed to poison the American population for sixty years. This is one of the most successful scams in history.

I simply cannot understand the need of professionals to quote information from the CDC rather than review the current scientific studies themselves. Instead, their favorite tactic seems to be that of discrediting those who are against the practice. I can't tell you how many times our local professionals in government here in Davidson County have given me false data and information that they simply copied from the CDC. How can I trust the very organizations that are supposed to protect our health when the risks are so obvious.

The answer, of course, is that I cannot. Only a collection of dedicated individuals who work outside of the system will ever affect such change. And, in this case, change is coming much faster than any of our "officials" will admit. But, as usual, once the truth is considered everyday knowledge, those same officials will stumble all over themselves attempting to realign their opinions to conform to the new accepted norm.

Fluoridation will someday go the way of leaded gasoline and the dinosaur.

Water Fluoridation - Deadly Disaster 3/3

Australia - Fluoride on agenda for Coonabarabran

Fluoride on agenda for Coonabarabran
Posted 5 hours 51 minutes ago
Fluoridating town water supplies is back on the agenda in the Warrumbungle Shire.
A representative from the Department of Health will address today's council meeting to discuss the benefits of fluoride. In 2005, the council overturned plans to fluoridate water supplies in Coonabarabran after outcry from the community.
The council's general manager, Bob Geraghty, says the shire's six towns are now all eligible for government subsidies.
"Previously we had thought that some of the smaller towns might not have been eligible," he said."But the advice at this stage is that they will all be.
"So the State Government, through its Department of Health, will fund 100 per cent of the implementation of devices to fluoridate the water."There is strong support from most Warrumbungle Shire councillors to introduce fluoride into town water supplies.Mayor Peter Shinton says the new council contains a doctor and a couple of councillors with science degrees."The local dentist has said to me that we'll probably have difficulty in attracting a dentist in the town the size of Coonabarabran if we don't have fluoridated water," he said.
"I think it's something that will sail through."

FLUOROSIS IN HORSES DRINKING ARTIFICIALLY

FLUOROSIS IN HORSES DRINKING ARTIFICIALLY
FLUORIDATED WATER
Pixi Macicek,a Lennart P Krookb
Hitchcock, Texas, and Ithaca, New York, USA
SUMMARY: Quarter Horses drinking water artificially fluoridated at 0.9 to 1.1 ppm
over long periods of time developed dental fluorosis. Even when the horses had not
been exposed to artificially fluoridated water (AFW) during formation of enamel,
brown discoloration occurred and progressed. Pronounced loss of tooth-supporting
alveolar bone with recession of bone and gingiva was also present as more severe
signs of chronic fluorosis than enamel changes alone. The scene of these events was
a lowland part of Texas just above sea level. AFW at these low concentrations can
obviously induce chronic fluorosis in its own right without the support of high
altitude.
With a change to low fluoride (0.1 ppm) well water, a remarkable improvement was
observed in the general health of the horses in a very short time. Most notably,
bothersome episodes of colic promptly ceased

Toothpaste advice to parents aims to stop the rot in kids' teeth
16 December 2008
By Clare Semke
Health reporterParents will be advised which toothpaste their children should use in a bid to improve the city's dismal oral health record.Portsmouth's health tsar is sending a list of approved fluoride toothpastes to all 27 NHS dental practices in Portsmouth so they can tell parents which to use.
Children aged under three-years-old should use toothpaste containing at least 1,000 parts-per-million of fluoride, in-line with guidance from the Department of Health.
Youngsters aged between three and six years should use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing between 1,350 and 1,500 parts-per-million of fluoride.
As revealed in The News yesterday, latest figures show oral health among five-year-olds in Portsmouth is among the worst in the south-east and worse than the national average.
Children have an average 1.8 missing, decayed, filled or treated teeth by the time they start primary school, compared, to 1.5 nationally.
Dr Paul Edmondson-Jones, the city's director of public health and wellbeing, also wants dentists to encourage more parents to take their children for checks.
He is also issuing a reminder that children should brush their teeth last thing at night and on one other occasion under adult supervision. They should also spit out their toothpaste after brushing but should not rinse their mouths.
He said: 'The primary care trust is clear that children should start regularly attending general dental practices as soon as they are able to follow simple instructions.
'This enables an oral inspection, a discussion about oral health promotion with the parent and provides an opportunity to familiarise the child with dental care.
'This also provides a chance to reinforce to parents that dental care is free for children.'
Portsmouth City Teaching Primary Care Trust will also produce a guide for parents of children aged six and under to go along with the lists of fluoride toothpastes they should use to help protect their teeth from decay.

UK - Portsmouth State of kids' teeth sparks fluoride bid

State of kids' teeth sparks fluoride bid
15 December 2008

Health reporter
THE NHS is to reconsider adding fluoride to the water supply in a bid to improve children's rotting teeth.
The controversial move comes as an investigation by The News today reveals five-year-olds in some areas have up to four decayed, missing or filled teeth by the time they go to primary school.
Evidence shows fluoridation can improve the dental healADVERTISEMENTth of up to a third of the population. But it can cause discolouration of children's teeth.
Portsmouth City Teaching Primary Care Trust abandoned plans to call for a study into fluoridating the water supply in 2006 after board members voted six to five against the move.
But Paul Edmondson-Jones, director of public health and wellbeing, said he still backs fluoridation and could revisit the issue as early as next April.
Health officials will await the verdict on plans to add fluoride to drinking water in Southampton – which has been unanimously opposed by Hampshire County Council – before taking action.
Dr Edmondson-Jones said: 'We're definitely going to revisit fluoridation in Portsmouth, but we would be silly to do anything before we have learnt the outcome of the consultation in Southampton.
'We have awful oral health in Portsmouth – it is among the worst in the south east. We have done a lot of work to try to improve that over the last five to 10 years but it hasn't really changed things.
'There is no evidence whatsoever that fluoridation causes any lasting harm or damage other than a small increase in fluorosis of the teeth in children.'
But fluoridation has its opponents.
Anne Richards, from Hampshire Against Fluoridation, said: 'Fluoride is a registered poisonous substance and it can be extremely damaging. To fluoridate the water supply is totally irresponsible.'
Portsmouth city councillor Eleanor Scott, who is in charge of education, children and young people, added: 'I'm not convinced that the are no health risks associated with putting fluoride into the water.'

Bad as Ireland with the referendum, keep coming back until they get the result they want. The NHS will end up being reviled.

USA - Law requires water systems to add fluoride — if state provides funding

Law requires water systems to add fluoride — if state provides funding
By Mike Hasten • mhasten@gannett.com • December 14, 2008 2:00 am
Larger water supply systems throughout Louisiana have until March 1 to assemble plans that could result in all of their customers receiving fluoridated water to improve dental health.
But the mostly municipal systems don't have to purchase the equipment and start fluoridating water until the state supplies the money.
Bossier City is among several Louisiana water systems that already add fluoride to water, and most systems have naturally occurring fluoride. Systems in Shreveport and the surrounding area, Springhill, Natchitoches, Lake Charles, Vidalia, New Orleans, Houma and Leesville also add fluoride to drinking water.
State law (Act 761 of 2008) says water suppliers that have at least 5,000 service connections must submit to the Department of Health and Hospitals by March 1 plans and cost estimates for installing the necessary equipment. The Legislature this year re-enacted and strengthened a law that suggested fluoridation by 2000.
"Most of the civilized world is fluoridated," said Dr. John Taylor, a Crowley dentist and one of the leaders of the fluoridation movement who got his city to start adding fluoride in May. "Here's a chance for Louisiana to join the rest of the civilized world."
But not everyone agrees. A number of Louisiana residents express concerns about fluoridating water, especially in excessive amounts.
James W. Reeves, a retired civil engineering professor in Lafayette, says he and many others are opposed to "forced medication" and "putting toxic waste in my water."
Reeves says he doesn't "claim to be an expert and I'm not" but he has researched the dangers of fluoridation and found more risks than benefits. Too much fluoride results in fluorosis, which ranges from white spots on teeth to brittle bones and teeth, in extremely highly fluoridated water.
He said he is concerned about "swallowing a little bit of poison for the rest of our lives" and what happens when it builds up.
A Centers for Disease Control says that about 70 percent of the people in the United States drink fluoridated water daily and "since community water fluoridation began in 1945, it has been demonstrated to be a safe and cost-effective way to prevent tooth decay."
Fluoride is a naturally occurring element in water, and "we're just adjusting it to its optimal level," Taylor said. "Now we just have to get the money."
Tom Ed McHugh, director of the Louisiana Municipal Association, says the money catch may be the deciding element in the fluoride debate. With an impending $1.3 billion shortfall next year, "the state having extra money for fluoridation is not likely."
Adding fluoride has stirred controversy in some areas of the state. But Health and Hospitals officials and the American Dental Association say it is important because it inhibits bacteria that cause tooth decay and strengthens enamel damaged by bacteria.
Don Broussard, water operations officer for Lafayette Utilities System, said opponents of adding fluoride have organized in Lafayette but he is proceeding with meeting the March 1 deadline for submitting plans.
Besides the state funding loophole, the law has provisions that allow municipalities to opt out of fluoridation.
Broussard points to a section of the new law that allows a referendum of system customers if 15 percent of the elected voters in a service area sign a petition and the governing body — in Lafayette's case, the nine members of the city-parish government — agrees to such a vote. Opting out of fluoridation would require a vote of more than 50 percent of the water system customers.
"That may be what some of the opponents are pushing for," Broussard said.
The law also says the governing body of a parish would be responsible for calling for a vote if the water system also provides service to registered voters in unincorporated areas of one or more parishes or if the water system was created or franchised by the parish or parishes.
Also, systems that have naturally occurring fluoride at significant levels could be exempted.
Jim Barnett, superintendent of public works for Bossier City, said his city's water system has been fluoridated for about 20 years. "We've never had a problem.
"You would have to overfeed consistently for quite a while before anything would show up," he said. The system is "closely watched and monitored regularly" and monthly reports are sent to Health and Hospitals.
Local dentists take samples and complain if the level drops just a bit, Barnett said. "They want to maintain doses in city water," he said, chuckling about dentists being concerned about a low level. "It seems like it would be bad for business" to maintain a level that fights cavities.
The ADA says the optimal level is 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter of water.
A 1997 Tulane University study found almost 50 percent of the community water systems in Louisiana had fluoridated water and 116 communities have naturally occurring fluoride at or above 0.7 milligrams.
In Lafayette Parish, 71 mobile home and subdivision systems tested were shown to have naturally occurring levels of 0.2 to 0.4 milligrams of fluoride. The municipal system was not included in the survey.
In Ouachita Parish, 57 systems were tested with levels ranging from a low of 0.1 milligram in the Monroe city system to 1.4 in the Mathis Waterworks System. Several subdivision systems were at 0.7.
In Rapides Parish, 28 systems were tested. Alexandria, Camp Beauregard and England Industrial Airpark registered 1.1 milligrams per liter. Two villages marked the extremes, Woodworth the highest with 2.2 and Forest Hill the lowest with no fluoride detected.
In Caddo, 44 systems, including the Shreveport municipal system, were tested. The city, Barksdale Air Force Base, Haughton and several smaller surrounding systems all fluoridate their water. Other systems in the parish have low levels — about 0.2 milligrams per liter — of fluoride.
Studies prove water fluoridation is effective in reducing tooth decay by 20 percent to 40 percent, even with widespread availability of fluoridated toothpaste, Health and Hospitals documents say. And fluoride has been cited as the primary factor in saving about $40 billion in oral health care costs in the United States in the past 40 years.

Vietnam - Over 80 percent of Vietnamese children suffer tooth decay

Over 80 percent of Vietnamese children suffer tooth decay
A child has his teeth examined at a HCMC dental clinic. Experts report that 80-90 percent of Vietnamese children aged six to eight have tooth decay.
A recent conference highlighted an alarming rate of dental disease among the country’s youth and the need to improve dental education.
More than 80 percent of Vietnamese primary school students have tooth- and mouth-related diseases, while schools fail to provide adequate dental health education, according to a recent dentistry conference held in Hanoi.
It is estimated that 80-90 percent of children aged six to eight have tooth decay, said Trinh Dinh Hai, head of the National Institute of Odonto-Stomatology Vietnam (NIOS).
Each child has as many as six decayed baby (or milk) teeth, Hai said at the conference held by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) on Wednesday.
And most children don’t receive proper treatment for their decayed teeth, Hai said.
More than 60 percent of children and 50 percent of adults have never had a dental exam, the conference heard.
The number of children with tooth and mouth disease in urban areas is higher than other areas, despite urban children receiving better dental and stomatological care, the Administration of Preventive Medicine under MOH reported.
This is thought to be due to the increased amount of sweets consumed by urban children, the agency said, adding that a lack of fluoride in children’s diets could also contribute to cavities.
The number of children with inclined, or severely crooked teeth, also stands at around 80-90 percent. Experts said this was due to children’s baby teeth not receiving proper and timely care.

Thought to be? It isn't lack of fluoride.

Canada - Lots of evidence against fluoridation

DEAR EDITOR:
This letter is in response to Ivor Davies’ November 28 letter entitled ‘Anti-fluoride movement nonsense; confusing people.’ The problem with Davies’ whole argument is the belief that our professionals and experts are right no matter what.
And saying that “the anti-fluoride groups seem, for some unknown reason, determined to traduce existing and growing known science, research and technology and replace it primarily with addled nonsense that unnecessarily confuses and alarms the general public” is further proof that Davies is replying on historical hearsay and not recent empirical evidence.
Is Davies saying that the growing legion of scientists who disagree with fluoridation are all addled and are misrepresenting the truth? Please, like I have asked everyone else who agrees with fluoridation, please show me the actual scientific study that proves it’s safe.
From what I have read, growing known science is gravitating away from fluoridation, as is almost all of Europe.
Milton — not the new pipe section — has never had fluoride, and from what I remember has no major differences between itself and all other fluoridated areas.
The Canadian Dental Association and the Centre for Disease Control (U. S.) have only ever said it’s safe and is one of the 20th century’s greatest achievements. All I want is proof, and not the same tag lines I’ve heard for years.
The “addled” scientists have given me reams of information to the contrary.
Please prove all the scientists wrong and I will accept this smoke stack scrubber waste of the phosphate fertilizer industry in my own water.

Australia - Stop it, you're killing us

Stop it, you're killing us
AUSTRALIA is in the grip of a deep, dark conspiracy, of which Strewth is now apparently part, to keep the truth about the dangers of fluoridation of water supplies from the public. Yesterday we made the mistake of referring to anti-fluoride campaigners as "nutters" when discussing the fluoridation of the water in Canberra in 1966 and the proposed fluoridation of drinking water in southeast Queensland by Premier Anna Bligh. Rarely has one paragraph brought such a flood of angry emails, most of which commented at length about the above-mentioned conspiracy. Strewth, it seems, is in league with lying dentists, politicians, newspaper editors, television news presenters and scientists, all of whom promote the addition of fluoride to water supplies while claiming it reduces tooth cavities. The truth, according to the legion of correspondents who wrote at enormous length, is that fluoride will kill us all.

Australia - Council says no to flouride

Council says no to flouride
December 12, 2008
FLUORIDATED water is coming and the state government has given Gympie Regional Council until December 31, 2010 to fluoridate Gympie, Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove.
Some local councillors are against the move that Premier Anna Bligh says will save the state $1 billion in 30 years for dental costs.
At a Community and Economic Development Committee Meeting on Wednesday councillors voted to write asking the state and Premier Bligh to reconsider the fluoridation of town water supplies.
The motion went on to say instead of fluoridating water the government should ensure there are available supplies of fluoride tablets for those who "wish to be medicated".
The motion was sparked by correspondence from the Friendly Society Pharmacy who said some manufacturing companies had now discontinued the production of fluoride tablets and they would no longer be selling them.
Deputy Mayor and Community and Economic Development Committee chairman Cr Tony Perrett said it seemed odd companies were no longer making the tablets, as people without town water may need them.
Cr Ian Petersen, who moved the motion, said he would prefer to have a choice of drinking fluoridated water.
"I think its wrong, it's compulsory medication," he said.
Cr Petersen said the cost of putting fluoride in drinking water wasn't proportionate to the benefits people would experience.
He said in regards to water usage, the amount of water people drink is only small and a large amount of fluoridated water would be flushed down the toilet or used in the garden.
"What are they going to put in next? I'd be happy to go along with it if we had a referendum," he said.
Cr Jan Watt seconded the motion, saying in the past people in this region had expressed they didn't want fluoride in drinking water.
"I am personally opposed to fluoridation. We do provide tablets to those who want it. The health benefits and disadvantages are highly debated," she said.
Cr Watt said the government offered to subsidise smaller towns like Imbil being fluoridated, but councillors were not going to take the government up on the offer.
"As a councillor I have to comply with the state government. But there is enough cause for concern that fluoride should warrant a serious investigation. I've got huge concerns about health claims."
Cr Watt also said people would be absorbing fluoride when showering, which was worrying.
Queensland Health Chief Executive Officer Dr Jeannette Young said fluoridated water was more effective then tablets as it was more beneficial when applied topically.
Council is planning to fluoridate town water supplies in the later half of 2010.

UK - Southampton MP Chris Huhne sides with anti-fluoride campaign

Chris Huhne sides with anti-fluoride campaign
6:40am Friday 12th December 2008
By Lucy Clark »
A HAMPSHIRE MP has added his voice to the campaign against adding fluoride to Southampton’s water supplies.
As the debate on fluoridation for the city moves into its final week, Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne has spoken out against the controversial proposals.
He has submitted a formal objection to fluoridation to the South Central Strategic Health Authority (SHA), stating that adding the chemical to the tap water of the majority of Southampton and Eastleigh removes people’s choice.
Southampton health chiefs want to see fluoride added to the water to boost poor dental health among children in the city, but Mr Huhne states there are no conclusive arguments for or against water fluoridation and, therefore, he does not support it.
He said: “My concern with the proposal is that evidence both in favour of and against the fluoridation of water supplies is largely inconclusive. Similarly, research into the possible negative side effects has also, to my mind, not been proven to be conclusive.
“My conclusion is therefore that the case for fluoridation is not compelling, and it should not be undertaken.
“Whilst I am not against the principle of fluoridation as a method for improving dental health, neither the benefits nor the potential side effects of water fluoridation have been proved and I believe, in such a situation, the only justifiable course of action is to take no action at all.”
Mr Huhne also cites environmental considerations as concerns, as Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has raised concerns about hexafluorosilicic acid – a chemical commonly used in water fluoridation – being added to the water supply.
The trust argues that it could pose a risk to the environment because it releases hydrogen fluoride when it evaporates, which can be corrosive.
There is just one week left to have your say on the proposals to fluoridate the water supply of nearly 200,000 residents in and around Southampton.
More than 6,000 people have officially submitted their views to South Central SHA, which will make a final decision in February.
The public consultation on fluoridation for Southampton ends next Friday, December 19. Comments can be submitted by letter, online or by email.

FAN Bulletin 1013: Looking for a "Super Angel"
December 10, 2008
Our annual fund drive - launched yesterday - has got off to a rather slow start. We have raised just $355 in the first 24 hours, bringing our current total to $955. However, this total does not include donations sent in by mail. Thank you to everyone who has donated.

Meanwhile we are looking for a "Super Angel."
Last year several very generous people (our "super angels") offered a dollar-for-dollar match for donations up to a given amount over a given period. For example, someone last year offered $2,500 if we were able to raise that amount within a week. Knowing that a donation over this period might be doubled proved to be quite an incentive and created a lot of fun this end. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we might get one or more of these "super angels" to do this again this year. We will keep you posted.

Here again are the details for FAN's 2008 Fund drive. Please give as generously as you can.
Our goal: $80,000 by midnight EST on Dec 31, 2008.
Raised to date: $955.00
Donations are tax-deductible. FAN is a project of the American Environmental Health Studies Project, which has 501(c)(3) non-profit status, so your donations are tax deductible. Make sure FAN gets some of your hard earned money not Uncle Sam!

Donate online or send a check. Making a secure donation online is very easy and quick to do. Simply click here. However, we pay a commission on each donation for this excellent service, so if you wish to make sure we get every cent of your donation please send us a check made out to FAN and send to Paul Connett, 82 Judson Street, Canton, NY 13617.

A special thank you gift. A brand new 28 minute DVD, consisting of a compilation of comments by over a dozen distinguished professionals explaining why they oppose fluoridation, has been produced by Kevin Hurley and edited by Michael Connett. We believe that this video will be a tremendous help in convincing academics, doctors and local officials that fluoridation must be halted. According to Michael, this will be FAN's best video yet. The DVD will be ready at the end of December and we will be sending it as a thank you gift to all those who donate over $100 to our 2009 fundraising campaign.
