July 10, Colombo: A study conducted by the Institute of Fundamental Studies of Kandy points to the high percentage of fluoride in water in some areas of the North Central Province of Sri Lanka as the reason for the high prevalence of renal diseases in the area.

The scientists of the Institute of Fundamental Studies conducted a survey in relation to well water in areas like Kekirawa, Mahaelagamuwa, Giribawa, Galgamuwa, Jayanthipura, Polonnaruwa, and Kahatagasdigiliya where prevalence of renal diseases is high and found the well water is high in fluoride content.

The scientists point out that consuming the fluoride-rich well water in these areas for a long time can cause renal diseases as well as dental and bone fluorosis in the body

The Institute of Fundamental Studies recommends the people consumimg water from high fluoride wells be given new wells.
