But founders of the largely volunteer-driven nonprofit clinic serving Calumet, Outagamie and Winnebago counties have long dreamed of doing prevention and early intervention with youngsters who have limited access or whose families cannot afford dental care. The services would keep cavities and other problems at bay.
Last year, the clinic launched Focus on the Children.
As more families find the clinic via word of mouth and through agencies, the clinic, which has seen compounded client growth between 10 percent and 12 percent during the last three years, is stepping up its outreach.
"The goal is to get to children ages 3 to 12 and break the cycle of poor dental care so they don't replace their parents in emergency rooms and clinics like ours," said Robert Glass, clinic executive director and a Focus on the Children designer.
"We see 34 patients a day now, 12 to 13 percent are emergencies and about 10 percent of our emergencies are children," he said. "If we can get children on the right track to take good care of their teeth, we think we can reduce that number."
The clinic's target population it wants to reach with school screenings is large, Glass said.............
