Northern Ireland - Dental study

Published on Saturday 19 May 2012 17:05
COMMUNITY dentists in Carrick are to participate in a new study aimed at making a significant improvement to the oral health of young children.
As Northern Ireland has the highest level of childhood dental decay in the UK, the trial is aimed at improving children’s dental health.
Around 1,200 children aged two to three years are taking part, along with 88 dental practitioners working in community and high street dentistry across Northern Ireland.
The trial will evaluate the use of fluoride varnish and fluoride toothpaste in preventing dental decay. The trial will follow and monitor the oral health of participants over a three year period.
The findings from this pioneering study will be used to inform the development of future children’s dental health policy in Northern Ireland and across the UK and wider afield.

  • Topical application of fluoride may help, but drinking it to prevent tooth decay is as foolish as drinking sunscreen to prevent sunburn. People should not be forced to consume a drug against their will.

  • I wonder how many people believe that. Fluoride in the water kind of makes sense because it passes over your teeth so it's not like the sunscreen analogy unless you've been getting sun burns on your tongue or something
