Nightmare

That's What They Call Customer Service?
PHILADELPHIA (CN) - A Nestle customer service representative told a woman she would "slice her throat" and "watch the blood drain from you" after she called with questions about the company's bottled water, the rattled customer claims in court.
Shimrit Ellis sued Pamela Vaughan, Nestle USA and Answernet Inc., et al., in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas.
Ellis claims she bought Nestle's Pure Life Water on Aug. 5, 2012, then called the company's customer service department to ask about health concerns related to fluoride.
"Shortly thereafter, plaintiff, Shimrit Ellis, started to receive very graphic and violent death threats by phone from an unknown female," the complaint states.
"By way of example, inter alia, some of the treats [sic] that were made to plaintiff by phone were:
     "a. 'I'm going to slice your throat.';
     "b. 'I finally found where you live and watched you go to work. You're going to die.';
"c. 'People are going to watch the blood drain from you when I stab you with a knife'. (Also described the knife with which she was going to use to kill plaintiff). These were among many vivid and horrible threats to plaintiff." (Parentheses in complaint.)
Ellis claims she received such calls at least three times a week for nearly a month, when she finally reported them to the Philadelphia Police Department.
At that point, the complaint states, "Plaintiff's phone records were subpoenaed by the police and the calls were traced to Nestle Tollhouse Call Center, which revealed they were being made by a female employee, later identified as Pamela Vaughan, to whom plaintiff lodged the original complaint about the ingredient/additive, fluoride, being in the bottled water."

Ireland - Motion on fluoridation falls

By Paul Shinnors
IMO members have rejected a call for the Department of Health to support a media campaign to highlight the causes of dental decay – namely poor diet and inadequate dental hygiene – and stop the practice of adding fluoride to public drinking water.
Proposer Dr Elizabeth Cullen (Kildare) stressed to members that the motion was not about whether or not fluoride reduced dental decay, but whether or not it should be put into our drinking water.
“If sugary foods are the problem, then the answer must be to reduce our intake of such foods and to promote adequate dental hygiene. The addition of fluoride to our drinking water is not the answer.” Dr Cullen added that fluoride was the only drug she was aware of whose dose depended on “how thirsty you are”.
However, the practice of fluoridation was vigorously supported from the floor, with it being championed as the “biggest single thing we can do to prevent dental decay”.
Attendees at Carton House were told that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has described it as one of the 10 top public health initiatives that were undertaken in the 20th century, likening it to vaccinations in terms of its impact, one doctor suggested.

USA - Beaumont could flush fluoride from water

Guiseppe Barranco/The Enterprise Photo: Guiseppe Barranco, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER / The Beaumont EnterpriseFluoride, the substance that keeps tooth decay away in less than 1 part per million in city water, could be squeezed out of the treated water supply because it corrodes pipes, city water utilities director Hani Tohme told City Council members.

A part per million is the same as a milligram in a liter or about three-tenths of an ounce in a quart. The concentration of fluoride in the water at a faucet in a city water customer's home is .065 parts per million, Tohme said.

In a couple of weeks, Tohme said he would bring more data for council to discuss.

The problem, he said, is the higher concentration of fluoride where it is added to the surface water supply at the city's treatment plant on Pine Street.

Dr. Alan Coleman, a dentist and the Ward I council member, said fluoride has proven safe and reliable over decades in the prevention of tooth decay.

Ward II councilman Michael D. Getz thanked Tohme for researching the issue and said many of his constituents have expressed concern about fluoride......

NZ - Group takes fluoride decision to court

AARON LEAMAN
Hamilton's prolonged fluoride saga will have a sequel in court.

Safe Water Alternative New Zealand (Swanz) delivered on its promise to challenge Hamilton City Council's decision to re-introduce fluoride into the city's water supply.

The anti-fluoride group lodged a statement of claim with the High Court on Monday asking for a judicial review of the council's process in re-introducing fluoride and in particular an alleged failure to comply with the Local Government Act's special consultative procedure.

The group also argues that adding hydrofluorosilicic acid - the chemical added to create fluoride - to the city's water supply is unlawful because it is a medicine....

Dental care: Tennessee’s forgotten health crisis
Dr. Michele Blackledge, D.D.S.
Last week I examined a 29-year-old woman who had never before seen a dentist. As I probed her mouth she reacted with a battery of questions: What are you doing? What’s that for? How does it look?

It looked awful. Her teeth are decayed, her gums are compromised from periodontal disease and she suffers from significant dental pain, which led to the visit.

Such cases are far more common than you might imagine. Every week I treat patients in their 20s whose mouths are filled with decay, after years of ignoring their oral health. Some, like the woman described above, grow up without dentists, and as adults suffer from “dental phobia.” So rather than visiting a dentist they rely solely on emergency room visits for pain relief, which adds to congestion and unnecessary expense at our hospitals.

The sad fact is Tennessee is experiencing a serious dental health crisis. Over one-third of the population in our state did not visit a dentist in the past year, nearly one-third (31.5 percent) of Tennesseans over the age of 65 have lost all their teeth, and more than half (53 percent) have lost six or more teeth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A key cause of this problem is a shortage of dentists. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services categorizes 94 percent of Tennessee counties (89 of 95) as having dental health professional shortage areas.......

NZ - No fault with fluoride quiz answers

No fault with fluoride quiz answers

No fault with fluoride quiz answers

The Advertising Standards Authority has found no fault with the answers to the fluoride quizzes run earlier this year. The Authority has simply ruled that, because FANNZ is an advocacy organization, it needed to identify whether the answers were established fact or only FANNZ’ opinion.
The Authority said that simply stating on the quizzes that FANNZ is an advocacy organization might have been sufficient.
In fact, most of the answers are established, or generally accepted, fact. The remaining four are all supported by current evidence-based science, although opposing advocacy groups might consider other answers to be correct. Of course extremists such as the complainant’s group refuse to accept anything against fluoridation as a religious/political posturing, no matter how settled the science is.
On many points the complainant accepted that the answer was correct, but simply argued about how the public would react to these facts. As an example of the extremism of the complaints the complainant says that “the claim that tooth decay is primarily caused by poor diet is … alarmist”.
In a recent online debate international fluoridation expert Dr Paul Connett, who recently visited NZ, fully discredited this groups’ claims, which they could not support with credible science. Neither would any bona fide fluoridation-promoting organization support their claims in an open public scientific forum held in Wellington in March.
Even in the High Court, Justice Hansen recently stated “with all the evidence against fluoridation it is a wonder anyone still supports it”.
The evidence for and against fluoridation will be presented to the Kapiti Coast District Council at a special tribunal-style hearing on fluoridation on 21 May.

USA - Determining fault elusive in BWL plant accident

Even three years later, almost any review of the July 2011 accident at the Board of Water & Light’s Wise Road Water Plant leads to the same question BWL investigators pursued in the accident’s immediate aftermath.

Lansing Board of Water & Light's Wise Road Water Plant opened in 1966.How did a load of bleach end up being pumped into a fluoride tank, creating a corrosive cloud that sent three people to the emergency room and doing $23 million in damage to the plant?

BWL had taken safe delivery of chemicals to the plant for decades, had a long-service, “beyond competent” and licensed operator on duty, had mandatory safety protocols for handling every step of deliveries, and the fill ports for a bleach tank and fluoride tank are on different exterior walls (southeast and north, respectively) of the plant.

“I lay awake at night wondering what happened,” Water Director Dick Peffley, a 38-year veteran of BWL, told the State Journal.....

Accidents always happen given time.

Ireland - motion calling for an end to water fluoridation rejected

The President of the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) says "political interference" is harming doctors' ability to properly treat patients. The comments from Dr. Matthew Sadlier came on the opening day of the union AGM in Kildare this morning.

Meanwhile a motion calling for an end to water fluoridation here was overwhelmingly rejected at the conference.

USA - Critics of putting fluoride in the Dallas water supply received a surprise

Dallas Dental Society Opposes Council members' Support of Dropping Fluoride

Critics of putting fluoride in the Dallas water supply received a surprise Wednesday when three members of the Dallas City Council agreed with them.

The fluoride opponents have been making regular visits to Dallas City Council meetings for several months asking that Dallas stop the addition of fluoride which has been done for nearly 50 years to help fight tooth decay.

The opponents claim the city could save about $1 million a year that is spent to add fluoride.

Dallas Councilman Sheffie Kadane said he has discussed ending the practice with City Manager A.C. Gonzalez.

“We don’t need it and we’d just save a million dollars that we can use for something else,” Kadane said. “We’re looking into seeing what we can do immediately so we can get those funds up front now.”

Councilmembers Scott Griggs and Jennifer Staubach Gates agreed with Kadane.

“Yeah,” said fluoride opponent Regina Imburgia. “This is major big. I knew we would prevail. It only makes sense. We’re spending too much money on an ineffective program.”

Imburgia said she is more concerned about possible health consequences of drinking fluoridated water. She said fluoride toothpaste is a better way to fight tooth decay.

In response to this story, the Dallas County Dental Society said fluoridation programs are supported by more than 125 professional and health-related organizations and that they support years of peer-reviewed scientific research that verifies the benefit.

The dental society went on to say that the cost of not fluoridating the water would be significantly higher than doing so and that every dollar invested in water fluoridation saves $38 in dental treatments. They added that the lifetime cost of fluoridated water for one person is less than the cost of one silver filling.

"We don’t want to see citizens of the city of Dallas jump on the anti-fluoridation bandwagon because of scare tactics and misinformation. We want to encourage all members of the public to contact us or their own dentist (or medical doctor) if they have questions," said the Dallas County Dental Society, in a statement released Friday.

The city officials’ comments dealt with the potential savings and not health issues.

Dental dangers: what you may be passing to ......

Updated: Thursday, April 24 2014, 11:23 PM EDT Rochester, N.Y. – Already at the age of five, Imari James has had four cavities. "It kind of makes me feel like I'm not doing my job, like I'm not doing what I have to do to take care of her dental hygiene," Imari's mom Shavon Alvarado said. Alvardo says she’s never had a problem with her teeth and she makes sure her children brush daily. But even so, Ellie Phillips, D.D.S. says some parents can do everything right and may unknowingly pass bacteria to their children that can cause cavities and tooth decay. "Studies from the 1970's were done where they determined it was from the mother's mouths and now with DNA testing they can actually show that when mothers kiss and cuddle or lick the pacifier that their bacteria is being transferred to the child's first tooth," Dr. Ellie Phillips said. Once inside the mouth, it spreads quickly. "I would say it's almost a pandemic because it's now out of control," Said Dr. Phillips.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 42 percent of children, age two to eleven, have cavities in their baby teeth. 21 percent of children, age six to eleven, have cavities in their adult teeth.
And left unattended, pediatric dentist with the Eastman Oral Institute, Dr. Erin Shope, says it can lead to severe consequences. "Worst case I've seen has been a young child, say three or four years of age, out of the 20 teeth that they had, all of them had cavities to the point where we couldn't save the teeth, we had to take all his teeth out," Dr. Shope said.....

Ireland - Putting fluoride on tap 'unethical without consent'

ANTI-fluoride protesters have held a day long demonstration outside the Irish Medicines Board to draw attention to "the continued mass medication of the Irish people" through water fluoridation.

Aisling FitzGibbon, known as The Girl Against Fluoride, asked why "fluoride tablets in this country require a doctor's prescription and yet the Irish Medicines Board has never licensed the chemicals used in water fluoridation".
She said they wanted to highlight to the public how "various government bodies are complicit" in mass medication through the water system.
ARGUMENT
The protesters' message, she added, is simple.
"Whether you are in favour or fluoride or against it, it is unethical to put fluoride in the water and mass medicate without consent," she said. "That's the crux of the argument.
"This is a huge issue now because people are being asked to pay for water and a high percentage do not want fluoride in their water supply."
The occupational therapist from Tralee who says she overcame depression by removing fluoride from her own water supply, points to a growing body of research against fluoridation of water.
"The Lancet Journal, one of the most prestigious medical journals in the world, came out in March with evidence that fluoride was a developmental neurotoxin in the same category as lead and mercury," she added.
"The American Dental Association, which is in favour of water fluoridation, has warned, however, against making up baby formula bottle with fluoridated water."
The protesters were joined by a community circus from Cabinteely complete with fire jugglers, stilt walkers and balloon modellers.
A spokesperson for the Irish Medicine Board told the Herald that the fluoridation of public water supplies is outside the Board's role and remit.
"Fluoride salts or silica fluoride are not classed as a medicine, and as such there is no legislative requirement to license fluoride as added to drinking water," they said.

WATER
They pointed out that neither the drinking water itself nor the fluoride added to it in the form of fluoride salts or silica fluoride were categorised as medicinal products.
Under EC Regulation, water "when it comes out of the tap is defined as a food or foodstuff".
The Irish Medical Organisation is being urged to take a stand against fluoride in public drinking water at its AGM in Maynooth, Co Kildare, this weekend.
Dr Elizabeth Cullen of the Irish Doctors' Environmental Association, has tabled a motion calling for an end to the practice.

In spite of growing concerns about over-use of potent antibacterials in the home, some manufacturers are determined to keep shoving these chemicals down our throats.
At the New York headquarters of Colgate-Palmolive  there has been much trumpeting of the results of a recent study into the effectiveness of its antibacterial toothpaste, Colgate Total.

Inexplicably, the FDA ruling compelling manufacturers to remove triclosan and triclocarban from their soaps unless they could prove they were safe and effective, targets only soaps. Other products containing these toxins, including toothpastes and mouthwashes, are to be left unexamined.

USA - City May Stop Adding Fluoride to Well Water

Posted: Wednesday, April 23, 2014 6:32 pm
By Gregg Jones, Union Missourian Editor
The city will likely discontinue fluoridation of city well water.
The parks, building, development and public service committee agree to recommend the city not repair broken equipment used to add fluoride to drinking water.
City Engineer Jonathan Zimmermann said it would cost between $25,000 to $30,000 to fix the broken equipment. It has not been in service for several months.
He recommended the city stop adding fluoride, and added that Union, Sullivan and Pacific are the only municipalities in the county that add it to water.
“This isn’t something we have to do,” said Zimmermann.
Furthermore, when the equipment was working the city added fluoride to less than half of the city wells. It costs $12,000 per year to purchase the fluoride in addition to other costs related to adding to the water supply.
The additive also corrodes city infrastructure.
“It’s an acid and it eats the pipes,” Zimmermann said.
He noted that there also are safety concerns.
“Employees are handling it and they don’t want to,” Zimmermann added.
In the ’70s Union, along with cities across the country, began adding fluoride to water at the request of the American Dental Association.
The group made a push to get fluoride in drinking water because it reduces tooth decay. However there are some studies that suggest people are getting too much fluoride, which can be damaging to teeth.
“Now every dental care product has fluoride,” said Zimmermann. “There has been a lot of discussion nationally about the benefits.”
The recommendation was approved by a 5-1 vote with Alderman Dustin Bailey casting the dissenting vote.
The measure still requires a vote of the full board of aldermen.
Bailey explained he wanted to hear input from local residents and dentists before discontinuing adding fluoride.
“I don’t think it is worth jumping into it just because it will save some money,” said Bailey.
He later added that he doesn’t disagree with removing fluoride from water.
“I just felt the topic deserved more discussion,” he said. “I would have wanted more input from the public and educated resources before making a decision.”

Ireland - Doctors urged to oppose fluoride in water

Doctors urged to oppose fluoride in water

By Evelyn Ring
Irish Examiner Reporter

The Irish Medical Organisation is being urged to take a stand against the practice of adding fluoride to public drinking water.
Elizabeth Cullen of the Irish Doctor’s Environmental Association, will make her “commonsense” proposal on ending water fluoridation at the IMO’s annual conference in Maynooth, Co Kildare, on Friday.
Dr Cullen’s motion urges the IMO to call on the Department of Health to support a media campaign highlighting the causes of dental decay — poor diet and inadequate dental hygiene.
Her motion calls for an end to the practice of adding the chemical to the public drinking water.
Last month, Cork County Council unanimously passed a motion calling on the Government to stop treating the public water supply with fluoride.
Ireland is the only EU country, and one of only two in the world, with a national mandatory public water fluoridation policy.
Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney told councillors ahead of the meeting an international group of consultants is to be appointed by the Government to examine the use of fluoride in the public water supply.
“I know of no other drug whose dose is determined by how thirsty you are,” Dr Cullen said yesterday.
Dental health had improved not because of fluoride, she said, but because people consumed less sugar and brushed their teeth more regularly.
“You can get fluoride from foods — sardines and tea are high in fluoride,” she said. “Toothpaste and mouth washes also contain fluoride. My concern is that we don’t know the total dose people are getting.”
However, Dr Cullen is steering clear of talking about whether fluoride causes cancer because there were too many conflicting studies on the issue. “I am just making a commonsense argument against having fluoride added to public drinking water and I hope my colleagues will support it,” she said.
Tomorrow, the Girl Against Fluoride campaign group will protest outside the Irish Medicines Board in Dublin to highlight that the State’s drug-policing watchdog has never licensed the chemicals used to fluoridate drinking water.
Girl Against Fluoride campaign leader Aisling Fitzgibbon said she was delighted that a medical doctor was speaking out against putting fluoride in public drinking water.
“We need more medical professionals like Dr Cullen to speak out because it the weight of public opinion that will eventually shift this issue,” she said. “Sodium fluoride tablets are only available on prescription and at a certain dose, but it is in the water supply in an uncontrollable dose.”
Ms Fitzgibbon is taking a High Court action against the Government for putting a substance in the public water supply that had never been passed as safe by the Irish Medicines Board.
“I am not against using fluoride to combat tooth decay, I just don’t want it in the water supply,” she said.
“We do believe it does pose health risk to a certain amount of people in the population.”

UK - Cornwall poisoning

Village of the damned: Mysterious suicides. Agonising illness. And now, 25 years after UK's worst case of mass poisoning, the first evidence that dirty water has KILLED people

  • Camelford in Cornwall was poisoned with aluminium sulphate in 1988
  • A van accidentally dumped 20 tons into the household water supply
  • Villagers were immediately poisoned, but water was soon deemed safe
  • Since then, several deaths and illnesses have been linked to aluminium
  • Dead villagers have been found to have had high levels in their brain
  • They all suffered early onset dementia and died relatively early

Kim Davey: Seven principles for a happy, healthy life

Kim DaveyTo lead a happy and healthy life you do not need tonnes of money, to live somewhere exotic, or to keep up with the Jones's. All you do need is to live by seven basic principles and incorporate them into your everyday life. These principles are so simple some of you may scoff. But the truth is:
Life is simple. People are complicated.
I discovered these principles when working with my friend and mentor Don Tolman (the wholefood cowboy from Salt Lake City, Utah). Don shares his message on the seven principles of health worldwide and has changed and saved many, many lives from death and disease.
Principle 1: Walking . Every day get out of the house and into the world on a 45-minute fast-paced walk.
Getting the body moving is the best thing you can do for it. Keeping joints active, muscles moving and your heart rate pumping is a surefire way to keep yourself fit and healthy.
Add in a hill or two for a fat burning workout. Notice I didn't say "drive to the gym and walk on the treadmill" - it's crazy business! You need to get out in the fresh air come rain or shine!
Principle 2: Fresh Air - oxygen = life and fresh air clears the head and moves the blood around our bodies. Please note - air conditioning is the devil! Ever noticed how stuffy, stagnant air in the workplace always makes you drowsy and gives you a headache? How when one person gets sick everyone else does too? Yuck! No more air con - open the windows! If you are cold, man up and put a jersey on. Fresh, moving air is the key to a healthy mind and body.
Principle 3: Clean water - There has been a lot of debate recently regarding adding fluoride to our waters.
OMG really? Talk about controlling the masses! If you want fluoride (a toxic chemical) in your water, you add it, but stay away from mine! Clean, fresh, filtered water is what our bodies need. Nothing added to it.
The cleaner the water the better it is for us. The body does not recognise toxins and poisons that councils decide to add to it. So make sure you are drinking pure filtered water and lots of it.
If you get headaches it's generally because of two things - not enough water or not enough fresh air. Don't take a panadol (more drugs for the body to filter out) drink water and go for a walk outside. I guarantee you it will be gone when you get back.
Principle 4: Sunshine - Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in! - The sun is the biggest healer on our planet. Vitamin D from the sun is the purest and most fabulous thing we can give to our bodies. It helps every cell prosper and grow and makes you feel happy! What can be better than that? There is so much marketing and fear mongrel around sunburn and skin cancer - stay away from the sun, the sun is evil - this is a huge money making ploy and keeps us fearful of one of the true gifts of living on this planet.
Yes, you can get sunburnt and that hurts and is not good for you. But instead of putting toxic sunscreens on your beautiful skin every time you go out, get in the sun every day for 20 minutes with no sunscreen and feel the effects.
After 20 minutes cover up with hat and T-shirt etc so you don't get burnt. Building up a slow and natural tan is wonderful for the mind and body. Getting burnt is not.
Principle 5: Wholefoods - Last week I spoke about how the world has gone crazy with foodless foods and lifeless drinks. Organic (no sprays and pesticides) fresh wholefoods - fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes - are the No1 way to keep your body in perfect working order. Eating these foods allows your body to create the fuel you require to get through the day.
Eat a fat, greasy pie and you will look and feel like a fat, greasy pie! Eat a delicious, nutritious, wholefood meal and you will look and feel like a delicious, nutritious wholefood meal - and that's sexy! Foodless foods become stored as plaque in the body. Over time plaque builds up and is stored in the body as what we call tumours. Don't eat crap!
Principle 6: Positive Relationships - Loving, supportive friends, family and partners are crucial to our overall health and mindset. Often overlooked as a cause of health and mental issues, the relationships in your life can dictate how you feel about yourself and your place in the word.
Choosing to associate with only positive and uplifting people will see your life skyrocket in the direction of your dreams. Associating and living with negative, grumpy, controlling people will kick your confidence and keep you in a depressive state.
So be sure to choose your friends and most importantly your lovers wisely.
Principle 7: Passion - What do you love? What brings you joy? Having passion for something - whether it is sport, dance, theatre, design, camping, horseback riding - and pursuing it as a hobby or full-time career will bring you the greatest joy. It connects you with other human beings who also share in your joy, creating friendships, self worth, confidence and purpose.
Find what you love and do it as often as possible.
Living by these seven simple principles will bring your life to an entirely new level. You will be satisfied, healthy, excited, energised and full of joy.
None of them require a lot of money, contacts or effort.
They do, however, require discipline and it is that which will determine your success. Enjoy!
Be Real. Be True, Be You!

Spreading anti-science irrationality

Judith C. Haden’s My View (“Fluoride not a necessary additive,” March 30) should have been tossed into the trash, not published in your newspaper. It is another in a seemingly endless line of anti-fluoridation (and anti-science generally) claptrap. The world has more than 60 years of data on fluoridation involving hundreds of millions of people, and over this time there has been not a single case of anyone being poisoned or otherwise harmed by fluoride in drinking water. No mental retardation, no shortened life span, etc., etc. There have been immense benefits to people’s dental well-being.....

Do you believe that?

Ireland - From Aisling

On Wednesday, 23rd of April The Girl Against Fluoride Team will stage a protest outside the Irish Medicine's Board at Kevin O’Malley House, Earlsfort Centre, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2 from 10am-6pm. The Irish Medicine's Board have never once licensed the water fluoridation chemicals, claiming the water fluoridation policy is a public health measure. This contrasts with the EU stance on hydrofluorisilicic acid which was banned for its use as a biocide in 2006 due to a lack of toxicological data.

The aim of the protest is to draw attention to the various government bodies that are complicit in the continued mass medication of the Irish people. It will also create much needed public awareness in the lead up to the court case. We will be joined by a Dublin Community circus who promise to regale us with fire jugglers, stilt walkers and balloon modellers. We will also have some rather eclectic musicians.

My team and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for whatever length of time you can spare.

Regards,
Aisling

Fluoridated USA - Tooth decay in children

Tooth decay has become a major problem among young children, and pediatric dentists are urging parents to take steps such as limiting sugary snacks and drinks. They also now advise brushing with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste and having a wellness exam at age 1, according to Dr. Norman Tinanoff, chief of the division of paediatric dentistry at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.......

What procedures does the dentist perform to prevent tooth decay?
On routine dental visits, the dentist will evaluate your child's risk for tooth decay. If it is thought the child is at risk, the dentist can apply concentrated fluoride on the child's teeth. Most often, this is in the form of fluoride varnish. If you live in an area that does not contain fluoridated drinking water, the dentist may consider fluoride supplemental tablets. Additionally, when you child's permanent molars come in, around age 6-8, the dentist may suggest that applying pit and fissure sealants will prevent tooth decay in those teeth.

What other affects will all that fluoride have on the body, we aren't just teeth?

Sugar is the cause of keiki dental woes

In West Hawaii Today April 10 it said that the PEW Center gave the state an F grade for our kids’ dental health. It gave as one of the reasons being that our water supply is not fluoridated. Here we go again, the push to fluoridate our water. The implication being that to fluoridate will upgrade our kids’ dental health.
How about telling parents to stop letting their kids eat and drink sugared foods? Do we really want to drink poison fluoride and cause all kinds of other very serious health problems just because parents are too uninformed or uncaring to stop the sugar tsunami inundating our kids?
Sugar is a slow poison. Fluoride is not the answer. It just adds to the problem. The solution is to cut out sugar.
A lot of other problems caused by eating sugar will also stop if people stop eating sugar.
To you parents and kids who think sugar is just fine, look around. See the sick, fat people with dental caries and diabetes and a host of other health problems. That is sugar poisoning.
Fluoride is a false promise of better health. Less sugar. Better health. No fluoride. It is poison even in small doses.
Parents, take responsibility for your kids’ dental health. It is not up to the state. It is up to you.

NZ - Raging fluoride debate continues ......

After nearly 23 years as a GDP, the fluoride argument refuses to disappear. It seems neither side is easily capable of rational, non-emotive discussion – the lines are drawn in the sand, and the drums of war sound again. To fluoridate or not to fluoridate, that is the question.
What if both sides could look at the evidence with fresh eyes, without prejudice? The scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of topical fluoride is proven beyond dispute. The recent DOH guidelines rightly state that fluoride is a natural element, but what is actually being added to our water?
The answer is sodium fluorosilicate and fluorosilicic acid. To my amazement, it is not a pharmaceutical grade chemical, but a waste product of the phosphate fertiliser and mining industries. In this state, it is not natural and far from pure, with impurities including lead, arsenic and cadmium. Maybe, finally, we could commence checks on fluoride levels among the general population to help eradicate fears – no health agency in fluoridated areas is monitoring F exposure or possible side effects. It has somehow slipped behind the medical radar.
Did you know that fluoridation is practised in only 3% of Europe? Israel is the latest country to stop fluoridation. An ongoing court case in Ireland, the only European country with mandatory fluoridation, is looking to ban it on health grounds. What other medication is provided on a one dose fits all regime? With dental fluorosis affecting a large number of Kiwi children, what is this doing to their bones? To their brains? Most SSRI drugs, such as Prozac, are largely fluoride based. A recently published review by the US Harvard School of Public Health concluded the IQ studies showing brain impairment needed to be taken seriously, the results remarkably consistent. Fluoride has now been reclassified as a developmental neurotoxin, in the same category as lead and arsenic.
How does fluoride work? Recent evidence would suggest that benefits are largely topical, so why do we need to ingest it? What other sources now contain fluoride, apart from dental products? Another surprise – it is in breakfast cereal, fruit juice, milk, cola, meat etc , so what is a safe dose and just how much are we getting?
Maybe, just maybe, we need to reconsider all of the facts, all of the options. Maybe it is time to draw a line in the sand and begin again- a fresh approach. Maybe it really is not as black and white as both sides would have you believe – according to WHO data, most Western industrialised countries have rejected water fluoridation yet experienced the exact same decline in childhood decay. Non-fluoridated Scotland is experiencing far greater improvement in children’s decay rates than that obtained through water fluoridation.
With an argument that rages on, why do I feel so nervous to raise these questions amongst my valued and respected colleagues and friends?

The interminable fluoridation debate - is it time to call a halt?

Published On:17-03-2014 by
johnrenshawAn article in a recent British Dental Journal revisits the issue of fluoride intake of children. The article points out that very young children are particularly and positively affected by the availability of fluoridated drinking water, that diet is the only source of fluoride for most infants and the importance of dietary evaluation prior to recommending the use of additional fluoride supplements Zohoori, F.V., Whaley, G., Moynihan P.J. and Maguire A. BDJ, 216, E3 (2014).

The scientific validity of claims for the effectiveness of drinking water fluoridation are generally questioned only by those whose position is radically anti-fluoride, whether their opposition is claimed to be based on the science or the ethics. For decades the benefits of water fluoridation have been set out in research paper after research paper, politicians have been battered by propaganda and Local Authorities have been begged to adopt local fluoridation schemes for the good of the oral health of the children who live in their areas.

And little or nothing has actually been achieved. Southampton is the latest city to attempt to fluoridate the water supply serving the poorest areas of the city and they have run into the same objections and legal blockades.
Is it not time to accept that, notwithstanding the validity of the scientific argument supporting water supply fluoridation, the idea of medicating the water supply is a step too far for the vast majority of the people of this country? What might have been possible when mass medication was believed to be the way to improve general public health is now seen as politically unacceptable and a definite vote loser for whatever political party puts it forward.

The days of mass medication are surely over. People nowadays know how to look after themselves and have no wish to have additional chemicals added to their drinking water. They see this as an unwarranted and highly personal interference in their lives without public support and without a real chance for the people to object. Councillors and MPs listen to their constituents listen to the views they express loudly and sincerely and then vote accordingly. The result is exactly what we have seen since Birmingham’s water supply was successfully fluoridated in 1964. Little or no further water fluoridation progress has been made.

This is not a rant against water fluoridation so much as a plea to listen to, recognise and understand the strength of the public opposition and to realise it is highly unlikely we will ever see mass fluoridation of the water supply and perhaps that might not be so bad.

Oral health is improving generally and the minority of children who need the help we could offer via the water supply are not likely to ever receive it. That may seem harsh and unkind but if the mass of the people have implicitly or explicitly decided that water supply fluoridation is not to their taste we are wasting precious time and resources on a project that is doomed to repeated failure.

Would it not make more sense to accept the ‘realpolitik’ we face and spend our time and energy pursuing a different approach that might have a greater degree of acceptability and effectiveness?

Even sugar-free soft drinks erode children's teeth

Sunory Dutt
Dr Chu Chun-hung, a clinical associate professor in community and family dentistry at the University of Hong Kong's (HKU) faculty of dentistry, recalls the case of a young boy who drank only soft drinks. The boy had such severe dental erosion that his two front teeth required root canal therapy due to the irreversible damage.
26dadf2e66a06f49074706724e626231.jpgChu says the boy was unaware that soft drinks, even those that are sugar-free, are acidic and therefore erode the structure of teeth. Added to that, the patient had used anti-hypersensitivity toothpaste that masked symptoms of erosion, such as sensitive teeth, and as a result worsened the condition.
Although this is an extreme case, a recent study by Chu and colleagues found dental erosion to be a common occurrence among primary school children in Hong Kong.
The study, published in BMC Public Health, found that among 600 12-year-old students surveyed across seven primary schools, 75 per cent displayed early signs of dental erosion, which the researchers linked to fruit juice consumption.

Would you pay £60 for chocolate toothpaste?

Makers claim it's non-toxic, cleans teeth, builds enamel and tastes like dessert
Theodent's range includes sold out £6 Classic - and 300 £60 extra-strength
Fluoride-free using Rennou, theobromine, calcium, and phosphate instead
Theodent 300 represents the extra-strength version of the proprietary formulation - at 10x the costSold in Whole Foods and online, and the company ship worldwide
For the child who has everything, now there's chocolate flavoured toothpaste - which costs £60 per tube.
Luxury oral care firm Theodent use an extract from the cacao plant instead of flouride, something they say is a family-friendly alternative substance, not least because it tastes like pudding.
'Harnessing the power of the cocoa bean', the patented ingredient dubbed Rennou is a safe-to-swallow replacement to toxic fluoride present in most toothpastes.
Theodent also claims that these compounds not only clean teeth, but actually build up your enamel, making your pearly whites even stronger.
As for why it costs such a steep price remains to be seen. The classic toothpaste claims to only cost £6 ($10), but is currently unavailable for purchase on the website.
But the Theodent 300 - the extra strength paste with extra high doses of rennou - is available for purchase, costing £61 ($99.99) per tube. Multipacks raise the price even higher and shipping costs also apply.

USA - CDC Announces 2012 SC Public Water System Fluoridation Quality Award Winners

One Response to CDC Announces 2012 SC Public Water System Fluoridation Quality Award Winners
NYSCOF
The 7 Decade Fluoridation Experiment has Failed
Instead of spreading less tooth decay across the land, fluoridation spread dental fluorosis (fluoride-discolored teeth) into every nook and cranny of America. Even though the CDC reports up to 60% of adolescents are afflicted with dental fluorosis, 51% of them have cavities.
Opposite to predictions, since fluoridation began in 1945:
1) Tooth decay crises occur in all fluoridated cities.
2) New dental professionals were created, e.g. dental therapists.
3) New dental schools opened.
4) Dental expenditures have gone up substantially, higher than the inflation rate.
5) Poor children’s cavities are more prevalent, severe, occur earlier and more likely to be untreated.
6) Despite dental spending growth, 42% percent of adults and 4 million children with dental problems could not afford dental care.
7) Over 4 million Americans had to get dental care in hospital emergency departments, according to the Journal of the American Dental Association. One hundred and one of those patients died while in the ER.
US Senator Bernie Sanders, in his 2012 report, “Dental Crisis in America,” says that 9,500 new dental providers are needed to meet the country’s current oral health needs

USA - Campaign against soda advances

Local politician’s campaign against soda advances

soda warning labels
Safety warning labels on sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages sold in California came a step closer to reality today when the Senate Committee on Health approved Senate Bill SB1000 on a 5-2 vote. The first-in-nation legislation was introduced by Paso Robles’ representative to the California Senate, State Senator Bill Monning, D-Carmel, to ensure that all Californians are aware of the link between sugary drink consumption and the exploding rates of diabetes and obesity.
“Consumers have a right to know about the adverse health effects of frequent sugary drink consumption,” stated Senator Monning. “SB 1000 does exactly what the beverage industry has long said we should do – educate the public – and this is the appropriate public health response to the scientifically proven risks that liquid sugar poses to the public’s health. The bill is a common sense measure that is overwhelmingly supported by the public.”

If enacted, SB 1000 would place a warning on the front of all beverage containers with added sweeteners that have 75 or more calories per 12 ounces. The label, developed by a national panel of nutrition and public health experts, would read: STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.

Research shows that a soda or two a day increases the risk of preventable diabetes by 26 percent. Sugary drinks are also the single largest contributor of added calories in the American diet, responsible for 43 percent of the additional calories consumed over the last 30 years. Drinking just one soda a day increases an adult’s likelihood of being overweight by 27 percent and a child’s by 55 percent......

Environmental Toxins Linked to Rise in Autism

Story at-a-glance

Environmental ToxinsState-mandated diagnosis of autism by a clinician for consideration in special education is linked with a near 99 percent decrease in the rate of incidence for autism and ID. If the school was required to pay for special needs, the likelihood of diagnosis dropped significantly.
Mounting research indicates that brain disorders are the result of excessive exposure to toxins from multiple sources, including the mother, while in utero
One recent study found that for every one percent increase in genital malformations in newborn males within a particular county, there was an associated 283 percent increase in autism
The correlation between genital malformation and autism offer strong support for the notion that autism is the result of parental overexposure to environmental toxins
Fluoride alone, which is still being added to many public water supplies around the US, can contribute to a seven-point drop in a child’s IQ score, on average
When the US National Toxicology Program was enacted in 1978, some 62,000 chemicals that were already in use were simply grandfathered in, even though they’d never been tested for toxicity
