Feed your babies Quavers and Crunchies, NHS tells mothers

Dieticians are telling parents to feed their children junk food, including crisps and chocolate
Quavers, Crunchie Bars, Skips and KitKats
NHS staff are telling some mothers to feed babies junk food to help them overcome feeding problems.
Leaflets given to families attending feeding clinic appointments with young children recommend feeding babies aged over eight months crisps, chocolate bars, fried foods and sugary sweets.
The advice — distributed by Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust — is aimed at parents whose children have “problems managing lumpy foods”.
The leaflet suggests “finger foods” under three categories: “Bite and Dissolve”, “Bite and Squash/Suck” and “Easy Chew Food”. Wotsits, Quavers, Skips and Pom-Bears are among the crisps to feature under “Bite and Dissolve”, as well as Mini Cheddars and meringue.
The document states that Kit Kats, Crunchies, Milky Bars and Ripple chocolate bars are also suitable “if a child sucks food well”............

172 comments many defending the Hospital as the advice is intended for only a few children with major problems in eating.

Influence of fertilizers on fluoride accumulation in tea leaves

Fluoride accumulation in tea leaves has been a widely concerned issue because tea drinking is currently one of the most popular beverages in the world. Unfortunately, the fertilizers used to promote the growth of tea trees inevitably cause serious fluoride accumulation in tea leaves. Here we disclose that the use of plant polyphenols-Ce hybrid materials as chelating absorbents could effectively suppress the accumulation of fluoride in tea leaves even compound fertilizers were applied during the growing period of tea plants. The adjacent phenolic hydroxyls of plant polyphenols are able to chelate with the Al3+ in soil, preventing the formation and absorption of AlFx complexes in tea trees. The adsorbents can effective absorb the F- via the positively charged Ce4+ based on electrostatic attractions. In filed plot experiments, the fluoride accumulation in tea leaves was substantially reduced up to 74.75% when the compound fertilizers were used accompanied with the polyphenols-Ce adsorbents.

Dentists never take in to account how much fluoride people such as heavy tea drinkers consume and the amount swallowed or gargled when they continuously call for fluoridation.

PHA 2014: Educating parents about dental care improves kids' toothbrushing rates

By DrBicuspid Staff

November 28, 2014 -- Caries is the most common chronic disease in children ages 5 to 17, according to the 2000 U.S. Surgeon General's Report, and research has shown that caries is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common that hay fever. But preventing caries requires more than just regular dental care -- it requires active management at home.

Researchers from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and Louisiana State University Shreveport studied the effectiveness of in-depth parental dental education and its influence on their knowledge and oral and dental health practices of their children. They presented their results at the recent American Public Health Association (APHA) annual meeting in New Orleans...........
According to the parent responses, "almost all the child patients in both the control and treatment group followed a daily regimen of toothbrushing." After the intervention, the treatment group "showed improvement with daily toothbrushing, frequency, and timing of toothbrushing," the authors noted.

Parents also "showed an increased awareness" in knowing about the kind of toothpaste used by the family and the children, in looking for fluoride in the toothpastes, identifying the kind of toothbrush used by their children, and the duration of toothbrushing. Compared with the toothbrushing results, flossing was not followed by the child patients on a regular basis before the intervention, the authors reported. Following the intervention, the researchers found "considerable improvement" in daily flossing in the treatment group.

The process "illustrates the patient attitude and response toward education programs," as about half the patients did not respond to the poststudy evaluation, according to the authors. They did conclude, however, that overall, the analysis indicates greater awareness in patients' oral hygiene knowledge and children's oral hygiene behavior, and that educating parents about oral hygiene does have a positive effect on their children's oral hygiene practices.

The study was titled "Determining the effect of parental dental education on dental hygiene practices in their children."The authors were Dennis Wissing, PhD, and Deepa Pishey, BDS, MHA, MPH. More about the study can be accessed on the APHA website.

Shocking' increase in tooth decay in children in West Midlands

300 per cent rise in youngsters in the region admitted to hospital for multiple teeth extractions

Tooth decay in children is rising rapidly in the West Midlands

There has been a 300 per cent rise in children in the West Midlands being admitted to hospital for multiple teeth extractions in what a senior dentist described as a “massive parenting failure”.
Some youngsters are undergoing hospital operations to remove all 20 baby teeth, according to Dr Nigel Carter, the chief executive of the Rugby-based British Dental
Tooth decay in children is rising rapidly in the West Midlands
Heath Foundation, who practises in the region.
Dr Carter said it “beggared belief” that a parent would not notice their child had a “mouthful of teeth rotten down to the gums”.
Figures revealed by the Health and Social Care Information Centre showed that in the West Midlands in 2010-11 there were 456 children under the age of 10 admitted to hospital with tooth decay.
In 2013-14 a “shocking” 1,444 were admitted.
Experts blame the trend on a culture of parents rewarding children with sweets while failing to clean their teeth properly as infants. Dr Carter said: “The rise is absolutely incredible and is indicative of a massive failure in parenting.
“Partly it’s down to background and people from lower socio-economic groups have higher levels of tooth decay. “It has to be about parenting and looking after children. “ In many cases the first time the child has ever seen a dentist is when they’re taken there in great pain.
“Basically if it gets as far as needing to go to hospital for general anaesthetic then you’re talking about multiple extractions. “It’s not unusual for a child to have 12 to 14 teeth taken out and in some cases we’ve heard of all 20 baby teeth being removed.”
In 2010-11 120 under-fours were admitted to hospital for surgery in the West Midlands. This had rocketed 353 last year.
One theory for the rise in childhood tooth decay in the last three years is rising immigration of people from Eastern Europe, who are moving over with their families and receiving treatment on the NHS. Three years ago the total number of people under the age of 19 needing to go to hospital for surgery was 996. Last year it was 2,074.
In 2010-11 there were 6,000 hospital admissions for tooth decay in the West Midlands of all ages. In 2013-14 that had risen to 7,883.
The move away three square meals a day can also be blamed for the growing problem, said Dr Carter. Dr Carter said: “Children are now having seven to 10 ‘grazing’ meals, many of which are full of sugar.
“Studies have shown that if you put a spread of food in front of children they would chose to eat a balanced diets. “But we have the problem where sweets are given as a reward and so they are identified as such by the children.”

Surely not in fluoridated West Midlands?

The Spice That Prevents Fluoride From Destroying Your Brain

The Spice That Prevents Fluoride From Destroying Your Brain
Green Med Info
Fluoride is found everywhere today, from antibiotics to drinking water, no stick pans to toothpaste, making exposure inevitable. All the more reason why new research proving this common spice can prevent fluoride damage is so promising!
Fluoride’s neurotoxicity has been the subject of academic debate for decades, and now a matter of increasingly impassioned controversy among the general public, as well. From ‘conspiracy theories’ about it being first used in drinking water in Russian and Nazi concentration camps to chemically lobotomize captives, to its now well-known IQ lowering properties, to its ability to enhance the calcification of the pineal gland – the traditional ‘seat of the soul’ – many around the world, and increasingly in the heavily fluoridated regions of the United States, are starting to organize at the local and statewide level to oust this ubiquitous toxicant from municipal drinking water.
Now, a new study published in the Pharmacognosy Magazine titled, “Curcumin attenuates neurotoxicity induced by fluoride: An in vivo evidence,” adds experimental support to the suspicion that fluoride is indeed a brain-damaging substance, also revealing that a natural spice-derived protective agent against the various health effects associated with this compound is available.
The study was authored by researchers from the Department of Zoology, University College of Science, M.L. Sukhadia University, Udaipur, India, who have spent the past decade investigating the mechanisms through which fluoride induces severe neurodegenerative changes in the mammalian brain, particularly in cells of the hippocampus and cerebral cortex.

Australia - Council votes to remove fluoride from water

Fluoride survey has residents frowning
BREAKING NEWS: Despite not receiving at least 50% of its fluoride surveys back the Southern Downs Regional Council has today voted to remove fluoride from town water supplies.
A report to today's council meeting in Stanthorpe shows only 25% of Warwick water ratepayers and 31% of those in Stanthorpe returned a recent survey asking if fluoride should be removed from urban water supplies.
The original council resolution was to rule the survey invalid if less than half were returned.
Some water ratepayers have claimed to have not received the controversial survey, which cost council $10,000. Others have said it should have been sent to all residents of the region.
Today's decision means fluoride will be removed from urban water supplies in Warwick, Stanthorpe, Allora and Yangan. Read more in tomorrow's print editions of the Warwick Daily News and the Stanthorpe Border Post.

Effect of water fluoridation on the development of medial vascular calcification in uremic rats.

Abstract

Public water fluoridation is a common policy for improving dental health. Fluoride replaces the hydroxyls of hydroxyapatite, thereby improving the strength of tooth enamel, but this process can also occur in other active calcifications. This paper studies the effects of water fluoridation during the course of vascular calcification in renal disease. The effect of fluoride was studied in vitro and in vivo. Rat aortic smooth muscle cells were calcified with 2mM Pi for 5 days. Fluoride concentrations of 5-10 μM--similar to those found in people who drink fluoridated water--partially prevented calcification, death, and osteogene expression in vitro. The anticalcifying mechanism was independent of cell activity, matrix Gla protein, and fetuin A expressions, and it exhibited an IC50 of 8.7 μM fluoride. In vivo, however, fluoridation of drinking water at 1.5mg/L (concentration recommended by the WHO) and 15 mg/L dramatically increased the incipient aortic calcification observed in rats with experimental chronic kidney disease (CKD, 5/6-nephrectomy), fed a Pi-rich fodder (1.2% Pi). Fluoride further declined the remaining renal function of the CKD animals, an effect that most likely overwhelmed the positive effect of fluoride on calcification in vitro. Ultrastructural analysis revealed that fluoride did not modify the Ca/P atomic ratio, but it was incorporated into the lattice of in vivo deposits. Fluoride also converted the crystallization pattern from plate to rode-like structures. In conclusion, while fluoride prevents calcification in vitro, the WHO's recommended concentrations in drinking water become nephrotoxic to CKD rats, thereby aggravating renal disease and making media vascular calcification significant.

Old video but makes you wonder if that is the object.

Australia - The Liberal National Party has endorsed a bodybuilder and anti-fluoride campaigner to run for them again in Queensland election.

The LNP confirmed on Tuesday that first-term Member for Nudgee Jason Woodforth, along with Ipswich MP Ian Berry and Ipswich West MP Sean Choat had been endorsed to run next year's state election.
Mr Woodforth has risen to prominence for speaking out against adding fluoride to drinking water.
The state government handed over control of fluoride to councils when it came to power in 2012.
A total of 13 shires have removed the chemical from their drinking water despite protests by Australia's top medical lobby.
Mr Woodforth has claimed 30 of his LNP colleagues wanted fluoride outlawed and labelled it a "brain-altering poison".
Last year he said he'd rather spend the rest of his life taking the banned performance-enhancing substance IGF-1 than drinking fluoridated water.

Mr Woodforth also once called for an end to personal attacks in parliament, after Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney used parliamentary privilege to accuse federal MP and mining magnate Clive Palmer of being a crook.

The threat to fluoridate the unwilling public is still there.

Dental organisations say access to water fluoridation is a postcode lottery

Too many communities with high levels of dental disease are being deprived of fluoridation benefits
The British Dental Association echoes concerns expressed by the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) today (24 November) that limited access to water fluoridation – only 10 per cent of the UK's population – means we are failing children who live in communities with high levels of tooth decay.
The BSPD highlights in its latest report on fluoridation that 60,683 children and adolescents in England were admitted to hospital in 2012/13 to have multiple decayed teeth removed under general anaesthetic, costing the NHS at least £27.6 million.
By contrast, evidence suggests that children living in fluoridated areas, such as the West Midlands, have around half the rate of tooth decay of those living in non-fluoridated areas, and thousands have been spared from traumatic and distressing operations. Research indicates that adults also benefit.
But despite the dramatic improvements in the oral health of children in areas where water is fluoridated, the BDA questions why a fluoridation scheme was recently abandoned in Southampton after being endorsed by Public Health England and a High Court ruling that the process in recommending water fluoridation had been lawful. Similar to the BSPD, the BDA is also concerned that water fluoridation was excluded from the NICE recommendations (published last month) for local authorities to consider when tackling high levels dental disease in their population.
The BDA believes that political and clinical leaders should ensure that dental health policies are driven by the available evidence, rather than pandering to misinformation and fear.
The BDA's scientific adviser, Professor Damien Walmsley, said:
"Water fluoridation is safe and is one of the cheapest and most effective measures to reduce unacceptable inequalities of tooth decay, yet public debate on this is often reduced to misinformation and scaremongering with little or no regard to the communities affected most by this largely preventable disease."
The Chair of the BDA's General Dental Practice Committee, John Milne, said:
"My practice is based in one of the most deprived areas in Yorkshire, and it's frankly heart breaking to have to refer young children to hospital to have several decayed teeth removed under a general anaesthetic when I see the dramatic improvements in dental health in areas that are fluoridated.
"Local authorities with a high prevalence of tooth decay in their communities should be able to consider water fluoridation if advised to do so by their experts in dental public health, but as the BSPD has noted, NICE wasn't bold enough to include this in its recent guide on measures to reduce tooth decay.  What kind of message does that signal to politicians and experts in dental health?
"Critics of fluoridation often say that tooth brushing schemes in nurseries and schools are the answer. Whilst these may be part of the solution, they are resource-intensive, require parental consent and don't always reach those communities with highest need, as we know from the fact that one in eight of our three-year olds have tooth decay."

Manufacturers love sugar

Lady stacking bread
Brown and wholemeal loaves of bread can contain as much sugar as their white equivalents.
Extra sugar is added to some products because it makes them taste better. When fat is removed from a processed meal, for example, sugar is often added to help disguise the blander taste.
Because of this, many foods we think of as wholesome – like yoghurt, granola bars, low-fat snacks and fruit-flavoured water – may actually contain much more sugar than we think
Like salt, these so called 'added sugars' help extend the shelf life of foods like bread, breakfast cereals and tinned fruit and vegetables.
This can result in us eating more sugar than our bodies can handle – because we don't always know when we're eating it.

Working out how much sugar is in your food or drink can be confusing, as it appears in many different guises, such as sucrose, glucose, fructose and honey.
Food manufacturers are not required by law to separate added sugars from naturally occurring sugars on a nutrition label, but you can find out how much total sugar is in a product by looking for the 'carbohydrates (of which sugars)' figure.
More than 15g of total sugars per 100g means it has a high sugar content, 5g of total sugars or less per 100g means it has a low sugar content............

Canada BC - ‘No’ side happy with fluoride referendum result

‘No’ side happy with fluoride referendum result
Bill Phillips
The ‘no’ side is, understandably, happy with the result of Saturday’s fluoridation referendum.
Fifty-four per cent of those who cast a ballot in the referendum, (10,171 people), said they did not want the city to fluoridate the water, while 8,764 said ‘yes’ to fluoridation.
“We are pleased the majority of those who voted agreed with our position that fluoridation of the water system is not the answer to improved dental health,” said Tracey Brown, one of the ‘no’ side organizers. “The BC Ministry of Health Dental Survey Report from May of this year supports this fact.”
Brown said the ‘no’ side was cautiously optimistic going into the referendum and is pleased with the “decisive” vote.
Brown said they believe many factors went into a successful ‘no’ vote in the referendum.

“First, many people are better informing themselves about their health and wellness and coming to understand that everything we choose to eat and drink impacts our overall health,” she said. “The addition of hydrofluorosilicic acid to the water removes that choice. The ineffectiveness and inefficiency of water fluoridation are other factors that affected the vote.”
She added that 97 per cent of the province is not fluoridated and yet B.C. has the best dental health in the country.
“Education supports good dental health, not fluoridation,” she said.
Brown added that, even though the referendum is not binding on city council, they are confident council will decide to stop fluoridation.
“The newly elected mayor and council have publicly stated that they would abide by the results of the referendum,” she said. “Mayor-elect Hall has stated repeatedly that one of his goals is to reconnect council with the community and the community has clearly spoken on this topic. We look forward to council acting quickly to end water fluoridation in Prince George.”
And, Hall has said he will support the referendum result.
“The referendum was designed to give the public an opportunity to voice their position,” said mayor-elect Lyn Hall in a Free Press questionnaire during the campaign.
“I will support the outcome of the referendum.”

No Naturally Occurring Fluoride Is Added To Drinking Water – See What’s Really Added

hazmat-728x400The resistance against water fluoridation might be a different story if the naturally occurring element of fluoride was added to the water. Fluoride is found in all natural waters, levels can be very high in groundwater, depending on a number of factors, such as the types of rocks and minerals of that region. Drinking water is the largest fluoride source.

Tap water, if fluoridated, on the other hand, is littered with hydrofluorosilicic Acid, a toxic industrial waste by-product that governments have been adding to  drinking water for over sixty years. Again, we’re not talking about the natural element of fluoride here, we are talking about industrial toxic waste.

Ireland

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Fluoride Free Towns project website

Bantry Group StatusThis project has been set up to serve as a platform to encourage citizens in all communities across the country to positively and proactively engage with each other at a local level on the fluoride issue and take collective concrete action to have Ireland’s mandatory water fluoridation policy reversed.
If we’re to continue to see movement and a fluoride free Ireland realised, we need to have fluoride free projects set up all over the country that will serve to encourage communities to engage with each other on the fluoride issue at a local level in time effecting local politics that will bring about a long needed change to Ireland’s outdated and dangerous public health policy.
If you or your community would like to get involved with the national effort, now is a good time.  There is an impending general election on the horizon and a template you can use to help your Town achieve fluoride free status as part of the growing Fluoride Free Towns Project.  Please see the link or feel free to contact us for more details…http://fluoridefreetowns.com/how-to-acquire-fluoride-free-status/

Along with electing a new Mayor and Council, residents of Prince George cast another ballot on the issue of fluoridated water. Just over 10,000 votes came back in favour of removing fluoride, while only 8000 voted to keep it. Those organizing the campaign to have it removed say people were upset over having "medication" forced upon them without their permission. Other arguments were made around the cost of the program, but there was one main case made.

Another Domino Falls in Ireland
Ireland is the last remaining country in the world with a nationwide fluoridation mandate, but likely not for long. On Monday, November 10, the Kerry County Council unanimously passed a motion opposing public water fluoridation. The motion states: “that Kerry County Council will write to the Government calling for the cessation of public water fluoridation.” The unanimously vote received cross party support and was passed without any disagreement amongst the councilors.
This is the fifth major Council to adopt a similar resolution this year and comes just weeks after Cork and Dublin, the two largest cities in the country passed motions along with Cork County Council and Laois County Council doing so earlier in 2014. These councils represent approximately 1.5 million residents.
According to local campaigners, “One Fine Gael Councillor who wished to remain anonymous said the job of Irish Water was not to medicate the Irish populace but to deliver clean and safe water.”   We couldn’t agree more!
For more information on the victory in Kerry, please visit the Fluoride Free Towns campaign (Like their Facebook page).
Also in Ireland, a great article was published in the October edition of Ireland's Dental Magazine written by documentary producer Marcus Stewart. It’s a great introduction to the fluoridation issue and a strong science-based rebuttal to the typical pro-fluoridation attacks. The article starts on page 20.

Dr Le Fanu's online health clinic, Friday 14th November 2014

Dear Dr Le Fanu
It was interesting to read the short piece on Duraphat and Fluoride Varnish in the Telegraph on 10th November.
I am heavily involved in fighting water fluoridation here in the West Midlands where the water is fluoridated at 1ppm fluoride (per litre of water). The Department of Health is in denial about water fluoridation and refuses to accept that fluoride damages health. It's difficult to prove the damage because the statistics on poor health problems are confounded by the mobility of the population of England. Fluoridation is also a government policy and nothing is allowed to rock the boat, so reading information on how fluoride hurt two people in two different ways in a national paper is a very rare occurrence.
The fluoride varnish programme is being rolled out throughout primary schools in England and Wales and is the treatment of choice for primary school children whose parents unwisely agree for their children to have the varnish painted on their teeth once every 6 months.
The treatment has to be repeated every 6 months, presumably because the varnish wears off. We are told that the varnish is not swallowed. However, I can't really see where else it could go. If children who are included in the fluoride varnish programme are suffering from gastric distress and lower bowel pain, then it's being kept very quiet. Either that or parents are not joining the dots.
Everything to do with fluoride and fluoridation, as far as the media is concerned, is kept under the blanket. National Media is inexplicably wary about featuring the issue so I'm surprised that you were able to get your short piece published. I hope that, in future, your hands are not tied.
If you are interested in this issue and would like to get involved, please let me know.
Joy
Dear Joy,
Thanks for being in touch and drawing attention to this fluoride varnish programme in primary schools about which I was unaware. I would be intrigued to know the evidence for this policy and would share your concerns about its possible adverse effects - especially given the experience related by Sheila B below.

Fluoride
My husband had similar symptoms. He complained for about year or longer about abdominal pains bloody stools couldn't drink red wine or beer. He was convinced he had cancer and had many investigations including swallowing a tiny camera, nothing was found and his doctor thought he was imagining his problems and I am afraid I did also!
He washes his teeth about 4 times a day using fluoride toothpaste, rinsed with a fluoride mouthwash and we had fluoride in the water when we lived in Ireland. We live half the year on our farm in U.S. which has its own well. While we were there my husband noticed his symptoms were not as bad and decided to stop the mouthwash and to use non fluoride toothpaste. Amazingly his symptoms disappeared almost overnight and he can once more drink red wine. He only drinks German beer as that does not have fluoride .
Interestingly if you buy toothpaste in Lidl which has fluoride in it there is a notice on the tube which says if you are getting fluoride from any other source consult your doctor!!

Comment on Southampton fluoride decision

Following the news that Southampton City Council have withdrawn plans to fluoridate the area's water supplies, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, issued the following comment:

"It is disappointing to learn that Southampton City Council has given in to anti-fluoride protestors in the face of clear evidence from Public Health England on the benefits of fluoridation.

"Extensive reports of three and five year-olds with tooth decay - something highly prevalent in this particular region in the UK - have also been ignored. Fluoridating the water supply, an idea the abolished Southampton City Primary Care Trust supported, would have been a significant step in reversing this problem.

"Tooth decay remains the most prevalent chronic disease in both children and adults, even though it is largely preventable. It falls on dental professionals to continue to educate local residents about practices of good oral health. Fluoride varnish treatments in practices, schools and socially deprived areas are the best chance we have to implement preventive measures. We will continue to lobby for nation-wide fluoridation as we believe it is the biggest single action the Government can take to reduce and tackle tooth decay.".....

The fat lady hasn't sung yet by the look of it.

You can add comments on their web page. There’s supposed to be two on there already but they are not appearing but perhaps they check them first.

Doctor's diary - Toothpaste trouble

Toothpaste trouble
The possibility that the high concentration of fluoride in toothpastes such as Duraphat might be a hidden cause of severe digestive problems would seem to be confirmed by a reader from the Isle of Skye, whose 90-year-old mother has been much troubled by abdominal pain and attacks of diarrhoea.
She realised when reading this column that the onset of her mother’s symptoms 18 months ago coincided with her dentist recommending Duraphat. “She stopped using it and, lo and behold, her abdominal pain and diarrhoea have vanished.”
Another reader reports experiencing a bad bout of irritable bowel syndrome following a visit to her dentist to have her teeth painted with fluoride. She did not make the connection until a repeat of her symptoms following a further session six months later. This prompted her to switch to using non-fluoride toothpaste, since when her bowels have become much less irritable.

Andovwe Advertiser - Pleased to see fluoride bid scrapped

I AM pleased to see that Public Health England (PHE) has scrapped plans to add fluoride to the water supplies in south Hampshire.
The plan was opposed by more than 70 per cent of local residents and all the local authorities in the area. Among the councils against the plans was Test Valley and I am proud to have taken a lead in that opposition.
The pros and cons of fluoridation were discussed in great detail by councillors. The debate was free of personal and political animosity and concentrated on representing the wishes and best interests of local residents.
Our conclusion was that fluoridation was an unproven, costly and unsafe over-reaction to a localised medical problem. What was, and still is, required is a targeted campaign to improve dental health where needed.
This decision by PHE is really important because it signals to health officials across the country that fluoridation cannot be imposed.
Congratulations to everyone who campaigned. You have shown that common sense and public opinion can take precedence over bureaucracy.

USA - Oliver Springs removes fluoride from water supply

Oliver Springs removes fluoride from water supply
Bob Fowler
OLIVER SPRINGS — The Oliver Springs Water Board has repeatedly heard the pros and cons of dropping fluoride from the town’s water supply, but Thursday’s vote may at last be the final decision.
When the current supply is exhausted, that’ll be it. Fluoride — described alternatively as a tooth decay preventive and a toxic hazard — will no longer go into the system, board members decided in a split vote.
Voting to end the practice were Maurice Walker, Don Shillings and Terry Craze. Board member Omer Cox voted against the motion, while Terry Holland passed on voting.
The decision culminates more than two years of occasionally heated debates on the controversial issue that has included some missteps in procedures as well as fervent pleas from supporters and opponents.................

They failed because no contract was signed by SHA with Southern Water and under the new legislation responsibility is now in the hands of the councils not the PHE. The other factor is the consultation held by the SHA never covered all of the area that owing to the pipework system would have fluoride in the water.
What a waste of money that could have vastly improved the health of the deprived children with parents that need educating.

Professor Stephen Peckham's letter to the Echo in response to the editor's comment about HAF

I welcome the Echo editor’s call for more to be done to help children with poor dental health (Echo 31st October) and thank him for acknowledging Hampshire Against Fluoridation’s campaign. HAF’s success was down to the support of local people who objected to having fluoridation imposed upon them. Our argument that fluoridation is ineffective and unethical is based on sound evidence.
HAF has indeed turned what the Echo terms our “formidable campaigning machine” towards the problems of child dental decay, having argued for a number of years for the use of effective alternatives. One of the great success stories has been the Scottish ChildSmile programme. In 2012 I met with the ChildSmile team in Glasgow to find out more about this programme. They were willing to come to Southampton to share their expertise if invited by local public health leaders – an offer unfortunately not taken up by the City Council. Instead we were told that a similar scheme was being delivered to children in the city and that everything possible was being done. Yet this scheme reached less than 10% of Southampton children. So much more could have been done for ALL children if the ChildSmile model had been adopted from the start, an approach now recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The key to success is making better use of existing staff and resources – not just dentists and oral health specialists - but nursery leaders, teachers, playgroup leaders and others who already work with young children.
Excellent results could be achieved if public health leaders implemented a forward thinking city-wide community programme which would reach the children most in need. Implementing fluoridation would have cost PHE several hundred thousand pounds - let’s hope that they now invest this in effective community dental health programmes in Southampton. Such a move would ensure widespread support.

USA - 5 Reasons to Reconsider Fluoride

About 70 percent of public water supplies are fluoridated in the United States which means approximately 221.2 million people currently drink artificially fluoridated water against their will. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies fluoride as a drug used to prevent or mitigate disease, specifically to prevent tooth decay, a disease that is not waterborne. Essentially, fluoridated water is a medical treatment being administered to everyone in uncontrolled doses without their informed consent. Below are five reasons why you should be wary of fluoride, and not just in your tap water.

1. Unnecessary
Fluoridation is not necessary, and only eight countries in the whole world fluoridate more than 50 percent of their water. The countries that do fluoridate their water, the United States, Australia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore, still have teeth problems. Countries, like England, who don’t fluoridate more than half of their water, have teeth that are just as good, if not better, than countries who do fluoridate their water, or so the World Health Organization says. It would be much better to eat a whole, unprocessed clean diet free of sugars and processed foods that promote tooth decay.

2. It May Not Help Your Teeth
Fluoride may not help with tooth decay. The National Institute of Dental Research conducted the largest survey ever the United States with over 39,000 children from 84 communities to show that there were little difference (less than one tooth surface and less than one percent) in tooth decay among children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities. You can buy natural toothpaste products, and if you need help choosing one, see Our Guide to The Best Natural Toothpastes.

3. We’re Overexposed
Children are being over-exposed to fluoride. Fluoridation of water has failed to achieve it’s main objective which was to lower the rate of tooth to reduce the occurrence of dental fluorosis, the discoloration of tooth enamel caused by too much fluoride, to 10 percent in children, but 41 percent of adolescents in the United States still have dental fluorosis.

4. It Might Hurt Your Thyroid
Fluoride may affect thyroid function. The U.S. National Research Council has stated that there are “several lines of information” that “indicate an effect of fluoride exposure on thyroid function.” In fact, European doctors used to prescribe fluoride to patients suffering from hyperthyroidism in the 20th century. These patients hyperthyroidism was effectively and efficiently reduced with just 2.3 to 4.5 mg per day of fluoride. Be sure you know what your thyroid needs in regards to certain nutrients, and eat a well-balanced plant-based diet that supports your thyroid.

5. Not the Ultimate Solution for Oral Health
Tooth decay is high in low-income communities that have been fluoridated for years. Water fluoridation is not the solution to the oral health crises that rampages through poverty stricken communities with inadequate nutrition and lack of access to dental care. Boston, Cincinnati, New York City, and Pittsburgh and other populous cities in America with large low-income communities still, despite water fluoridation, still are in an oral health crises, especially in children. “Baby bottle tooth decay,” is a serious problem poor children face, and fluoridation is ineffective in preventing oral health problems.

There are numerous other reasons why fluoride is controversial and worth researching on your own. In the meantime, look at see if there are any non-fluoridated water sources nearby you, and choose fluoride free products, like natural toothpaste and mouthwash whenever possible. You can should also consider getting a good water pitcher or filtration system in your home to prevent taking in tap water that includes fluoride and a host of other chemicals that are not beneficial to your health.

Why Dallas Should End Fluoridation Immediately: Paul Connett, PhD

URGENT! Dallas Is Poisoning It's Water Supply!

All about what they use to fluoridate.

Australia - Councils reveal fluoride legal costs

Darren Coyne
Ballina Shire Council and Rous Water spent almost half a million dollars defending the decision to fluoridate local water supplies.

In a report to Ballina council recently, councillors were told $170,000 had been spent defending a challenge from environmental activist Al Oshlack.

Meanwhile, Rous Water general manager Kyme Lavelle told Echonetdaily that it was “fair to say our costs were higher than that”.
‘Our costs in the NSW Land and Environment Court were in excess of $220,000 and we are negotiating with Mr Oshlack for recovery of monies,’ he said.
Rous Water recently awarded a contract worth almost $3 million to Aquatech Maxcon Pty Ltd for the construction of four dosing plants......

Fluoride Alert News

Ireland Takes Another Step Closer to Ending Fluoridation
The dominos are falling one-by-one in Ireland, with the end of fluoridation becoming more of a reality each day.  Just three weeks after the Dublin City Council—the nation’s capital and the largest city in the country--passed a motion calling for the immediate cessation of water fluoridation in Ireland, the second largest city’s council followed suit last week by passing the same resolution.
On October 29th FAN received word from Ireland that the Cork City Council voted 13-7 in favor of a resolution calling for an end to fluoridation throughout the country. This is especially great news because the University College Cork is located in the city, and is home to the dental school that has been the most responsible for promoting fluoridation in Ireland over the past 30 years. This now means that the two largest cities in the country, along with the largest county council, and at least 12 other county councils or corporations representing some 2-million people have called for an end to fluoridation in Ireland since 2000.
The recent victories have sparked a flurry of attacks by the pro-fluoride lobby, who are calling the movement a “risk to the young” and using scare tactics to mislead residents.
These two votes are likely to be the tipping point in the national effort that is gaining significant momentum due to campaigners like Owen Boyden and his Fluoride Free Towns campaign, scientist Declan WaughThe Girl Against Fluoride, and the hard-working fluoridation fighters Robert Pocock and Gladys Ryan who preceded them. For now (but not for long), Ireland remains the only country in the world with a national mandatory fluoridation policy.
Learn More About the Campaign in Ireland
November’s International Fluoride Free Teleconference will explore the amazing fluoride-free momentum building up in Ireland. This is an opportunity to hear how campaigners were able to successfully get the two largest city councils in the country, as well as the largest county council, to pass resolutions calling for an end to fluoridation in Ireland. This will be wonderful learning opportunity for campaigners around the world, so please register today for the November 9th teleconference. The event is free, but you must register to receive a reminder email and the call-in information.

If you missed October’s International Fluoride Free Teleconference you can now download and listen to the audio. The teleconference was on how to discuss fluoridation with friends, co-workers, and family without creating conflict.

Preventing Cancer with Ellen Connett - Fluoride: The Preponderance of Evidence

Ellen Connett is Managing Director of The Fluoride Action Network, with over 20 year's experience researching environmental toxins. Here are her main points:
Fluoride is a Hormone Disruptor. Endocrine system disrupting toxins are often associated with cancer.
Cancers associated with Fluoride are Bladder, Lung, Uterine, Oral, and Osteosarcoma.
Mother's breast milk has .004 parts per million fluoride. Babies fed with formula (diluted with fluoridated tap water) receive up to 250 times more fluoride.

Trick or treat

Maybe because I'm a different generation as there was no such thing as trick or treat when I was young but the idea of what this mother describes is to me repugnant. Apart from the morality issue especially as we know it is exploited by older children to inflict terror on those who don't bribe them to go away. Then there is the children stuffing themselves with sweets - what a way to raise children. No wonder children's teeth suffer.

Boosting Your Immune System: What NOT To Eat

image
Courtesy of The Sleuth Journal:
Tis the season for the flu shot propaganda machine to rev into high gear, as Big Pharma, the CDC, and the mainstream media urge people to roll up their sleeves and have toxins like mercury and formaldehyde injected into them, all in the name of “staying healthy this winter.”
There’s a much easier way to stay healthy that also involves toxins – the ones in our food supply. Only I recommend avoiding them instead of injecting them directly into your body.
If you consume processed foods on a regular basis, you’re forcing your immune system to work to protect you against the things you are ingesting, instead of fighting off viruses and germs.
Many people thoughtlessly poison themselves every single day. They have some white sugar and fluoride in the morning coffee. They have some MSG-laden, highly salted saturated fat at lunch and wash it down with a neurotoxic, artificially sweetened drink. Dinner gets picked up at a convenient drive-thru window, and it’s enriched with more MSG and some GMO high fructose corn syrup. Don’t even get me started on that late night snack in front of the TV. Most of what typical Americans eat can hardly even be considered actual food.
This isn’t just some far-fetched conspiracy theory. A recent study published in the Nutrition Journal focused on the effects of a junk food diet on the human immune system. Dr. Ian Miles, a physician at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, concluded that ingredients such as refined sugars, salt, saturated fat, artificial sweeteners, gluten, and genetically modified foods, all negatively impacted the human body, and led to to increased inflammation, reduced control of infection, increased rates of cancer, and increased risk for allergic and auto-inflammatory disease. On top of that, beneficial gut bacteria is disturbed, leading to a more vulnerable immune system.
The bottom line is, when you’re poisoning your system instead of nourishing it, you are working at cross-purposes with your body.
